Oregon football to face off with Big Ten power Michigan State in 2014, 2015

The Oregon football program announced Tuesday that it has completed negotiations for a home-and-home series with Michigan State starting in 2014.

The Ducks will first meet the Spartans at home in Eugene during the 2014 season, then travel to East Lansing, Mich., to complete the series in 2015. The two teams last met in a similar series during the 1998 and 1999 seasons, which each coming away victorious at home.

This latest agreement continues Oregon’s trend of scheduling marquee early season non-conference games, such as last year’s LSU showdown in Texas and a trip to Tennessee back in 2010 (Oregon will complete that home-and-home series when Tennessee visits Eugene in 2013).

“I have tremendous respect for the program that Coach (Mark) Dantonio and his staff have built at Michigan State,” Oregon coach Chip Kelly said in a statement. “There is little doubt a game of this magnitude will present an early-season challenge for us but one that hopefully will make our team better as the season progresses.”

The Spartans have put themselves on the map recently with consecutive 10-plus win seasons, and won a triple-overtime thriller against Georgia in the Outback Bowl back in January.

Athletic Director Rob Mullens expressed excitement similar to Kelly’s, citing the merits of another Pac-12-Big Ten matchup.

“The home-and-home series with Michigan State will complement the rigors of the Pac-12 Conference,” Mullens said in a statement. “The Pac-12 and Big Ten share many of the same ideals and this non-conference match-up will benefit both schools.”
