Freshman breaks four minutes in mile run

By Alexandra Burden

The Nittany Lions are continuing to make history.

This past weekend freshman Robert Creese broke the four-minute mile at the Flotrack Husky Classic at the University of Washington. Creese finished the mile in 3:59.52, leaving him in second place just behind Princeton’s Peter Callahan’s 3:58.76.

His fast time made Creese just the third Penn Stater to ever run a mile in less than four minutes in competition.

Creese joins Ryan Foster and Larry Mangan in the history-breaking club. Foster broke the four-minute mile in 2011 with a 3:58.49 and Mangan became the first Lions to accomplish the feat when he ran a 3:58.4 in 1980.

As a freshman, Creese has come a long way in a short time. Creese came into college with a 4:10.60 as his top time in the mile run and has continued to shred his time. Just a couple weeks ago on Feb. 4, Creese finished a mile with a 4:00.68.

Creese appears to be on the road to success and continuing to impress. Creese’s impressive career consists of not only breaking the four-minute mile but also breaking the NCAA record in the 1000-meters. Creese broke the record with a 2:19.53 on Jan. 14 here at Penn State..

Creese is not the only Lion who had a solid performance or set personal bests during the weekend.

On the women’s side, Caitlin Lane ran her best time in the 3000-meter race with a 9:15:16, which happens to be third fastest in the schools history.

The team will be back on the road this coming weekend at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Lincoln Nebraska.
