Despite minimal faux pas, Golden Globes fashion impresses viewers

By Marissa Stern

Ahhhh, smell that? It’s the smell of gowns, trophies, and brand new Fashion Police episodes. That’s right. It’s award season.

This is my favorite time of the year. Well, actually, just the red carpet. The hair, the shoes, the dresses, the accessories—any other girly thing you can think of that goes into making a red carpet-worthy look, I love.

And we can’t forget the male stars. Will they take the bow-tie route or rock a traditional tie? Blue suit? Black suit? Or in Ricky Gervais’ case, a maroon and black suit.

The Golden Globes did not disappoint. Other than the carpet, a spectrum of red invaded the carpet for the night. Reds, pinks, and classic black dresses reigned Globe fashion this year with the notable exception of Paula Patton who wore a Big Bird yellow strapless number. Though I don’t like the color yellow, Patton’s dress was actually very pretty and fun.

And now it’s trends time!

Trend #1: Under the Sea

One of the most notable trends on camera this year was mermaid-styled dresses, or according to Kelly Osbourne, “fishtail” styled. Reese Witherspoon, Kate Beckinsale and Sofia Vergara all wore dresses in this style and each looked gorgeous in her ensemble.

Trend #2: Headbands

I don’t know if it counts as a trend if only two people were wearing them, but headbands made an appearance this year atop Charlize Theron and Michelle Williams. It’s such a fun, simple accessory that enhances the outfit if paired correctly like Theron’s silver headband that matched the silver beads on her dress perfectly.

Trend #3: Bow ties

In the case of tie vs. bow tie, the bow tie won by a landslide. George Clooney, Adam Levine, and many others sported a bow tie and looked mighty classy. But who wore it best? The Dog from The Artist.

Trend #4: Dresses with multi-layered bottoms

These gowns were also seen on many stars such as Mila Kunis. I personally love tiered bottoms, they add layers of fun and shows off both the dress and its wearer’s personality.

Trend #5: Large, ruffled skirts.

Speaking of different bottoms, Piper Perabo, Elle MacPherson and Sarah Michelle Geller both wore dresses that were tight and fitting at the top, and flowed at the bottom. Evan Rachel Wood’s look had the most memorable bottom-half features with feathers at the bottom of her dress.

Trend #6: Beading and designs.

Nicole Kidman’s dress had beads AND designs, talk about a trendsetter. Glee gals Lea Michele and Dianna Agron worked this trend as well as well as Melissa McCarthy, whose deep green gown had a v-neck top that was outlined in gold beads.

Trend #7: Cool, open backs.

Stacy Kiebler, Evan Rachel Wood, Claire Danes, and others all had one thing in common: open backs. Though this is not a new trend, it was very present on the red carpet tonight.

At award shows like these, people remember the dresses. Not that the men don’t look great in their suits and what not, but they don’t have the same accessories and extra things that give women that extra “oomph!”

However, Brad Pitt, who was sporting a cane, is an exception to tonight’s trends. But then again, the cane was meant as a medical accessory, not as a fashion accessory.

Along with dresses people want to remember, there are those you may want to forget. Luckily this year there weren’t too many of those. Claire Danes’ black and white dress was not my favorite, but the criss-crossing, thick straps in the back made up for the square-ish front. Sarah Michelle Gellar also failed to impress with a large, blue, tie-dye dress her daughter picked for her.

Tilda Swinton, whose La Roux-like hair was probably higher than the shoes she was wearing, wore a light blue outfit that looked like a suit jacket over a long skirt. Once again, not my favorite. Amanda Peet wore an ivory, one shoulder, ruffled dress that looked like a tall wedding cake. Also, not my favorite.

But there were certainly more good than bad. Stars of the night who also deserve recognition for their fashion ensembles include Tina Fey, Viola Davis, Sarah Hyland and Shailene Woodley all looked beautiful just to name a few.

Judging from the trends seen at tonight’s event, it seems that there will be a lot to look forward to during this award season.
