No. 1 LSU tops Western Kentucky, 42-9

By Albert Burford

After a sluggish first half that left LSU with a 14-7 lead, the Tigers kicked it into high gear in the final two quarters to defeat Western Kentucky, 42-9.

The win pushed LSU to its first 10-0 record since the 1958 season.

Senior quarterback Jordan Jefferson got his first start of the season, while fellow senior quarterback Jarrett Lee didn’t see time until the fourth quarter.

“The decision made by the staff and myself on the quarterbacks was a one-game decision,” LSU coach

Les Miles said. “We’ll kind of go from there. I certainly liked how both quarterbacks played.”

Jefferson completed eight passes on 14 attempts for 168 yards and one touchdown, while Lee went two-of-four for 15 yards and a touchdown.

At the end of the first half, the Hilltoppers were dominating possession, holding the ball for 20 minutes, one second, while the Tigers only had possession for nine minutes, 59 seconds.

Sophomore running back Alfred Blue ran for a career-high 119 yards on nine carries for two touchdowns, including a 45-yard dash.

The Tigers saw issues with ball protection, as they fumbled four times, but only lost one.

Western Kentucky senior running back Bobby Rainey ran for 107 yards, but the LSU defense held him scoreless.

Rainey said he was proud of the Hilltoppers’ performance.

“We played hard and didn’t give up,” he said. “We scored more points than Alabama.”
