Penn State bars Sandusky from campus, will pay legal fees for Curley and Schultz

Penn State has barred former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky from campus after he was charged with sexually assaulting eight young boys, and officials said the university will pay for legal fees for two school officials charged with perjury in the case.

Sandusky, 67, was indicted Friday on charges of sexually abusing boys he met through his non-profit organization, The Second Mile.

Additionally, Athletic Director Tim Curley and Penn State Vice President for Business and Finance Gary Schultz were each charged with perjury and failure to report. According to the grand jury presentment, both men were aware that Sandusky engaged in “sexual conduct” with a young boy in a shower located in the Lasch Football Building and did not notify police.

Penn State spokeswoman Lisa Powers said the university will pay for the legal counsel for Schultz and Curley because the matter concerns how they acted as employees of the university.

In a statement released Saturday, Curley’s attorney Caroline Roberto said her client is innocent.

“We will vigorously challenge the charges in court, and we are confident he will be exonerated,” Roberto said in the statement.

Schultz’s attorney, Tom Farrell, also released a statement declaring his client’s innocence.

“We believe in the legal system, and we believe it will vindicate him,” Farrell said in the statement. “We will fight these charges in court, and Gary Schultz will be proven innocent of all of them.”

Powers could not be reached for additional comment.
