Gary Crowton to take offensive coordinator position at Maryland

LSU offensive coordinator Gary Crowton is leaving to take the same position at Maryland, Crowton confirmed to The Daily Reveille on Thursday.

“Maryland offered me the job and I took it,” Crowton said. “I was very happy at LSU. [Maryland] offered me a lot of money and it is a great opportunity for me.”

Crowton said he agreed to a three-year deal. Crowton made $475,000 this past season at LSU and was scheduled to earn $500,000 next season in the final year of his contract.

Crowton will have instant chemistry with new Maryland coach Randy Edsall, who takes over the position previously held by Ralph Friedgen. Friedgen was forced out last month after coaching the Terapins since 2001. Edsall, who was the coach at UConn last season, worked with Crowton at Boston College from 1991-93 when Crowton was the quarterbacks coach and Edsall was the secondary coach.

Edsall expects Crowton to install the same offense Crowton ran at Boston College, Louisiana Tech and BYU.

Crowton was LSU’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the past four season. He helped coach the Tigers’ offense to a 40-13 mark during that span.

“I appreciate all that Gary did for LSU during his four years with us,” LSU coach Les Miles said in a statement. “Gary helped us win a lot of games over the last four years, including a national championship. He’s an outstanding coach and a man of great character.”
