Chizik, Spurrier discuss showdown at the Georgia Dome

After an historic 28-27 come-from-behind victory against Alabama Friday in the Iron Bowl, Auburn sits at the No. 1 spot in BCS rankings.

Auburn jumps Oregon, the previous No. 1, who beat No. 21 Arizona 48-28 Friday. Auburn leads Oregon in BCS rankings by 0.0002 point, .9779–.9777.

Auburn held the top spot previously this season: during week 9 after a 24-17 home win against SEC West division rival LSU.Auburn coach Gene Chizik and South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier spoke to the media Sunday night about Saturday’s SEC Championship game.

Chizik spoke about the Iron Bowl victory and said confidence was not an issue for his team.

“We just need to execute better earlier in the game,” Chizik said. “We can’t start so slow, and that’s on both sides of the ball.”

Junior wide receiver Darvin Adams took a hard hit in the last punt play against Alabama.

Chizik said Adams would be ready for Saturday, but added many players on his team are feeling the effects of a long season.

“It’s one of those deals where this time in the year, not just Darvin, but a lot of our team have some bumps and bruises,” Chizik said.

Chizik also talked about the Tigers’ ability to come from behind in many games this season.

“They just have enough confidence in themselves and in each other that no matter how the storm is playing out (…) there isn’t any panic,” Chizik said. “I prefer not to be in that position, but it’s comforting to know we can come back and win a game. I’ve never been around a group of guys that has that resolve and ability to do that week in and week out, and I’ve never seen it happen this many times.”

Spurrier, whose team lost to the Tigers earlier this season, said the Gamecocks have improved in many areas since then.

“I think the biggest improvement we’ve probably made is pass defense,” Spurrier said. “Other than that, our special team play and kicker Spencer Lanning has been very good in his field goals and punting. Our defense is playing well now, which always gives you a chance.”

Spurrier also talked about winning six SEC Championship games with the Florida Gators and now making an appearance with the Gamecocks.

“That was our goal here at South Carolina was to be there and win the game there,” Spurrier said. “We didn’t think we had a team until maybe this year. Our guys set a goal of winning the East, winning the SEC, beating Clemson. We’ll see if we can finish off our goals this season Saturday afternoon.”
