Video game review: Blue Hedgehog of SEGA lore returns

Sonic has spin-dashed out of the 16-year hellhole he’s been in, and fans can finally forget the yearly violations that have plagued the series.

The game consists of what made Sonic a classic; fight evil, run fast, avoid spikes and find chaos emeralds. This is all that Sonic should have been; no exposition, just game-play at blistering speeds. That’s it. No gimmick.

The controls on the iPhone are very fluid, albeit a little tricky at first. Still, once in the thick of the game, players can expect a few cheap deaths due to bad finger placement.

The first zone is a mish mash of the first three original games, making gamers nostalgic of classic Sonic exploits. It’s fast, and has everything that gamers will have expected. One of the newest additions easily noted is that when the player goes through a loop, the camera stays on Sonic, and not the screen. The screen will turn with Sonic, and while it is a jarring change at first, it will become second nature quickly.

The “Casino Street Zone” is definitely the homage to the circus and casino street zones of yore. It’s full of ways to get tons of rings and build up extra lives for those tricky situations. In fact, there is an act in the zone that tasks the player with getting 100,000 points to finish. It’s quite fun, and it alludes classic “Sonic Spin-ball” action.

Fans will note that all of the classic sounds are present, including the final countdown jingle after each level is finished. The jumps, the rings and the attacks will bring back fond memories. They even added the homing attack from the most recent Sonic games.

Included are the classic bonus stages from the first games to find Chaos Emeralds. It’s a fun diversion that makes use of the accelerometer function, and is very good at mimicking movements.  It’s responsive, and breaks up the action nicely. These little tasty snacks build upon the classic stages.

Sonic’s newest addition is well suited to the mobile platform, is great for quick pick up and play sections and has great multi-tasking features. It’ll make any gamer happy to know that when a phone call comes in or a text comes through, they can get right back into the action.

The only downside is that game is short, but it is to be expected.

On that note, the game is gorgeous on whatever “iDevice” the gamer is using.  For those that are wondering if it’s worth getting, the answer is yes, and at 10 bucks, it’s a steal.
