Baker talks pensions and pesky gophers at ‘Caddyshack’ event

“Caddyshack” – a raunchy country club comedy about drugs, sex, money and golf – might seem like an unusual movie to play at a Republican fundraiser.

But this was exactly what happened on Thursday, as a “Caddyshack” star and the Republican candidate for governor joined forces at the Lansdowne Pub.

John Barmon Jr., best known for playing whiney brat Spaulding Smails in the golf slapstick “Caddyshack,” stood next to Republican Charlie Baker to share movie trivia and promote Baker’s gubernatorial campaign. Comedian Lenny Clarke and radio host Greg Hill also provided entertainment to the approximately 100 attendees.

“I think we are trying to do something different and fun and multigenerational,” Baker said in an interview with The Daily Free Press. Baker’s campaign is behind incumbent Deval Patrick by 5 points according to a recent poll.

Baker, who said he has seen “Caddyshack” five or six times, called it a “timeless” classic.

However, he added, “The main issue [of the evening] is the importance of the election.”

The night featured a “Caddyshack” showing, a speech by Baker and a Q&A session where the audience had to begin their question with one of the movie’s eminently quotable lines.

The night also included a round of “Caddyshack” trivia questions read by Barmon and answered by the other three hosts.

“Who helps Judge Smails find his checkbook?” asked Barmon.

“Would that be Deval Patrick?” answered Clarke.

Barmon, who has enjoyed the support of a loyal fan base 30 years after the film’s creation, said that the “Caddyshack” theme for the Baker event made sense.

“I genuinely think that the people who like Caddyshack are hard working, tax-paying Americans,” Barmon said, “and those are the people who are going to support Charlie Baker.”

However, for some attendees, “Caddyshack” was the main drawing point. Brian Young, who sported a T-shirt he won from a “Spaulding” trivia night in 1999, came with his wife Annie to take pictures with Barmon and get his autograph.

“I will admit I’m not happy with the current administration,” Young said. Though he also added that this event would have “no influence” on him politically.

“We are open-minded at this point, we are paying attention and seeing who is saying what,” added Annie Young.

It wasn’t all about “Caddyshack,” however. Fiscal reform was approached in a more serious tone in Baker’s speech – he addressed a plan for pension reform that would cap state pensions at $90,000 a year. He also spoke of a need to reorganize state government.

“What we don’t have is a state government that enables all the talent we have in Massachusetts,” Baker said.

The entertainers said they hoped their support could help Baker in some way.

“I’m probably a legit C+ celebrity so I think I can bring that to him,” said Hill, who likes to mention that he met Baker at Dropkick Murphys show.

“I worked on another campaign and everybody said you can’t do it, that’s Ted Kennedy’s seat, and a guy by the name of Scott Brown kicked their ass!” Clarke said to the crowd.

But many said they were more interested in the Nov. 2 election than the celebrities.

“I’m not exactly happy with the current administration so I’m just looking to see what’s out there,” said Juan Bradley, who came to the event with a friend who‘s a Baker supporter.

On the entertainment, Bradley added, “It really doesn’t persuade me either way.”
