UREC tests students’ fitness, eco-awareness

More than 500 people took part in the fitness activities and sustainability practices at University Recreation’s sixth annual Backyard Bash Sunday evening behind the Student Recreation Center.

The event featured free food and a live music broadcast by local radio station ZFun 106 in addition to the various activities. Participants had the chance to earn T-shirts and enter a drawing for an Apple iPad.

Students had the opportunity to participate in fitness demonstrations and activities such as UREC fitness classes, outdoor recreation demonstrations and a challenge course.

Backyard Bash attendees were given punch cards and earned punches by participating in the various events.

The demonstrations included rope-tying and tossing lifesavers on dummies. Many students grabbed helmets and harnesses and took on the challenge course, climbing on ropes and through tires. Attendees who brought their own water bottles also received a punch on their cards.

Cards with three punches earned students a free “Crimson Revolution” T-shirt, and cards with six punches were entered into the drawing for the iPad. The shirts, which were made from recycled materials, promote sustainability practices and honor the tenth anniversary of the SRC’s opening this February.

SRC Marketing Coordinator Ashley Jones said the event is funded mainly by students and is budgeted out yearly.

“My favorite part of this event is the energy of all the students coming back to school and all the new programs available here at the SRC,” said Molly Schotzko, assistant director of marketing and communications.
