Frankie Hammond Jr. earns second chance

By Anthony Chiang

After being kicked off the team because of a DUI arrest in June, Florida wide receiver Frankie Hammond Jr. is back in practice.

The coaches have taken away his scholarship and basically any chance he had of beginning the season as a starter, but he still has kept the right approach.

“It’s like I tell him, ‘You can’t walk around here with your head down all the time.’ He’s a great kid who made a bad — a bad, bad — choice and a bad decision,” wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni said. “He’s a good kid, and he’s just trying to make amends right now by keeping his mouth shut and playing as hard as he can.”

Hammond caught a touchdown in Saturday’s scrimmage and accumulated four receptions as a freshman last year.

NOTES

*Center Mike Pouncey said he is the offensive leader and defensive end Justin Trattou is the defensive leader.

*Urban Meyer said that he has noticed a different approach from safety Will Hill this year. “Night and day. There were a lot of issues. He was a guy that drank the poison or whatever you want to call it. He’s going as hard as we’ve ever had any safety go around here,” he said.

*Freshman wide receiver Adrian Coxson has been granted a release from Florida. A team spokesman said Coxson wants to play closer to home in Baltimore, Md.

*The Gators will hold their second scrimmage of the fall Saturday. It will be closed to the public.
