A plane carrying former LSU chancellor Sean O’Keefe crashed Monday night, leaving at least five dead, according to a report by CNN.

Former Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) was also on board.

A preliminary report from the Federal Aviation Administration said nine passengers were on the plane, which crashed near Dillingham, Ala.

The agency’s report said the plane crashed under unknown circumstances. At least five passengers are dead. Two survivors have serious injuries and another two have minor ones.

There are no details about O’Keefe, who is currently chief executive officer at EADS North America. A spokesman for EADS North America confirmed O’Keefe was on the plane to CNN.

O’Keefe was the head of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration before coming to LSU. He served as chancellor for nearly three years before resigning on January 16, 2008.

“The LSU community is deeply concerned about Sean and his family at this difficult time of uncertainty,” Chancellor Michael Martin said in a statement. “Sean is a valued member of the LSU family and our thoughts and prayers are with him. We also offer our prayers to everyone affected by this tragedy.”
