Campaign for Chicago Cubs manager begins

By Jimmy Johnson

The campaign for the Chicago Cubs managerial position has begun.

Last week, Lou Piniella announced that this let down of yet another season will be his final “hoorah” as a skipper in baseball which raises the question of who will be his successor, or lack thereof.

The ballot of potential hires for first year owner Tom Ricketts has many nominees within the organization in Ryne Sandberg and Bob Brenly with other interesting candidates who will be available this offseason including Joe Girardi.

With a payroll that is bigger than Carlos Zambrano’s ego and the uncertainty that still looms over the future of general manager Jim Hendry’s head, is the Cubs manager position looking terribly unattractive at the moment?

Doesn’t sound so friendly after all, does it?

Whoever is hired to take over the reins for Piniella will certainly have a lot of work if they are going to pull this franchise out of its 102, make that 103, year World Series drought.
