Men’s basketball: Sooners release non-conference schedule

By Oklahoma Daily Staff

The OU men’s basketball team released its non-conference schedule for next season Monday, which includes matchups against Arkansas, Arizona and Cincinnati.

The Sooners will host their season opener on Nov. 12 against Coppin State at Lloyd Noble Center, continuing the non-conference series for another season.

OU will face North Carolina Central (Nov. 15) and Texas Southern (Nov. 18) on three-day intervals before heading to Lahaina, Hawaii, to play in the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational. The field includes Connecticut, Kentucky, Michigan State, Virginia and Washington.

In addition to the trip to Maui, the Sooners also will compete in the All-College Classic in Oklahoma City against the Cincinnati Bearcats.

With a retooled roster that includes eight new players, the 2009-10 season is expected to be a rebuilding year for a team which lost its top-four leading scorers in Willie Warren, Tony Crocker, Tommy Mason-Griffin and Keith “Tiny” Gallon.

OU finished 13-18 last year, its first losing season and worst in more than a decade. The result was a drastic turnaround from a 30-6 season the previous year, where head coach Jeff Capel guided OU to a berth in the Elite Eight and forward Blake Griffin was the consensus National Player of the Year.

The Sooners would miss out on postseason play as Capel recorded his first career losing season as a coach.

Capel previously coached at Virginia Commonwealth University, leading the team to four consecutive years of at least 18 wins with an appearance in the NIT and NCAA tournaments.

OU will be led next season by senior guard Cade Davis, who averaged 9.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game last season.
