Tattoo artists follow stricter rules

RichardsnTattoo artists and piercers are now paying $250 each to become individually licensed.

A law was passed July 1 that increased regulations, but so far Chameleon Ink is the only Bellingham tattoo parlor whose artists’ licenses appear on the Washington state Department of Licensing website.

Previously, there were no regulations for individual tattoo artists or piercers, only for businesses themselves. The law requires tattoo artists and piercers to pay for each individual license. Each shop must also pay an additional $300 to be licensed.

Artists will also be required to take classes to learn more about blood-borne pathogens, or infectious agents such as Hepatitis B and HIV that are passed through blood.

Daniel Barringer, owner of Chameleon Ink in Bellingham, said he thinks the new law will help improve the safety and health of customers who want to get a tattoo or piercing.

“The standard that was set before was not very high, so this will help to move it in the right direction,” he said

Barringer said he is not worried about being required to pay new fees every year, but they could be a burden for anyone who is trying to open a new shop.

Dana Burnidge, a tattoo artist and piercer at Chameleon Ink, said he thinks the licensing will be beneficial.

“It is important for every artist out there to complete the blood-borne pathogens classes,” he said. “It helps keep the artists and the customers safe.”
