WSU Police identify former student

By Karl Henkel

Wayne State U. Police Chief Anthony Holt confirmed Monday that Anand Deepat Tambat, a 2006 graduate of the College of Engineering, was pronounced dead at Parking Structure 2 Friday after a fall, which means he could have died on impact or en route to Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Holt said the man, who was 31 years old, died of multiple injuries, including those to the head.

Holt said the cause of death initially was due to an “accidental fall,” but after further investigation, it appears to be a suicide.

While the surveillance tapes were still being viewed as of press time, Holt was able to rule out the possibility of foul play.

“He was not a victim of any criminal incident,” Holt said. “We know without a doubt there was no criminal intent.”

Holt said additional interviews with witnesses will still take place and that the investigation has not yet wrapped up.

“What we’re doing is trying to find out what took place,” he said.

What police know is that Tambat drove his car to the top level of Parking Structure 2 on the morning of July 9 and either fell or jumped from the structure at approximately 11:14 a.m.

Parking Structure 2 is located on Anthony Wayne Drive just north of Warren Avenue.

Paramedics responded to a call from a passer-by within minutes, buts Tambat was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Tambat was from India, where his wife lives. It is unlikely she has been contacted as of Monday.

He worked at Altair Engineering, Inc. at 1820 Big Beaver Rd. in Troy as a Project Engineer, according to his LinkedIn page. LinkedIn is a networking site for professionals.

A call to Altair confirmed he was employed there prior to his death Friday morning. Subsequent calls asking for further information have not been returned.

A representative of the Mechanical Engineering Department said administrators were notified earlier but none knew Tambat. E-mails to professors in the department have not been returned.

Anyone with more information should call the Wayne State Police Department at 313-577-2222.
