Hawkeye basketball legend apologizes for arrest

By Jordan Garretson

A former Hawkeye basketball superstar released a statement Thursday apologizing for his arrest last week.

Roy Marble, who played at Iowa from 1985-1989, was pulled over on a traffic stop July 2 in Cedar Rapids. He was charged with driving while barred, not having proof of insurance, and using an improper license plate light.

“I want to take this time to say I’m so sorry to my children: Roydevyn, Royonah, Roichelle, Alexis, Merrick and Royshaud Marble, who now all reside in the state of Iowa,” he said in a release Thursday. “I’m also apologizing to the rest of my family, friends and fans […] I have been in two altercations with the law, and I take full responsibility for my actions […] Driving is a privilege, not a right. I also want to say thank you to the Department of Transportation for reinstating my license.”

Marble was also charged last August with possession of marijuana as well as having an open can of beer in his car.

He scored 2,116 career points while at Iowa and remains the Hawkeyes’ all-time career scoring leader.

“Being the all-time leading scorer at Iowa comes with responsibilities and integrity,” Marble said. “I failed at that. I hope in the near future, through my actions and not my words, I can regain your confidence.

His son, Devyn Marble, is a 6-5 freshman guard on the Iowa men’s basketball team.
