Column: 3-man courthouse no laughing matter

By Charles LeGrand

About three weeks ago I was pulled over by an Illinois State Police Officer.

He clocked me going 82 mph in a 55.

The officer was merciful and docked the speed on my ticket to 75.

The ticket said I was to pay off my violation at the Cumberland County Courthouse in Toledo.

Since the courthouse was only a 30-minute drive from Charleston, I decided to drive and pay in person. As I pulled my car up to the small town square, I noticed no cars were parked by the square.

I walked towards the door of the old, small courthouse and became puzzled and slightly nervous.

My left foot wasn’t even in the door when I realized there was only one person in the main entrance of the building-a creepy middle aged looking man wearing a blazer staring at me.

Like any typical courthouse, the entrance had a metal detector, a table and a tray to put in your metal objects.

But one thing was missing-a security guard.

Dumbfounded, nervous from the staring man’s eyes and slightly frustrated, I took off my belt, removed my cell-phone and other metal objects, put them in the tray and slid them over to the other end of the table.

I then proceeded to walk through the metal detector and finish my security clearance.

By this point I was rather irked as the man who was staring at me kept staring at me and began laughing out loud, as if I was a jester in a castle.

I began my quest to pay my ticket by looking for the correct office.

Much to my surprise, I found no one in the first three.
The creepy man continued to keep his eyes glued as I paced about.

I stopped and asked him if he knew where I should pay my ticket.

He kept laughing and said that he hasn’t seen anyone for a while and had no idea.

Fumed at this point, I hiked upstairs looking for someone, anyone.

I turned to the first office and finally saw a human behind a desk, two actually.

They quickly and kindly took care of my ticket and money.
I began to make haste out of there, confused and glad it was over.

I do not plan on going to Cumberland County Courthouse again, nor do I plan on picking up another speeding ticket anytime soon.
