Armon Bassett to play for Hornets in summer league

By Vince Nairn

Armon Bassett will have at least one chance to prove he belongs in the NBA.

Despite not being selected in last month’s NBA Draft, the former Bobcat has been named to the New Orleans Hornets’ roster for the NBA Summer League.

Bassett received one of 12 roster spots on the team. He is one of nine players on the roster with no previous NBA experience.

The Hornets will play in Las Vegas from July 9-18. Second-year point guard Darren Collison headlines the squad. Collison finished fourth in the NBA’s Rookie of the Year voting last season, receiving one first-place vote.

Bassett was not expected to be taken in the June 24 draft, as he ranked No. 93 on the top 100 of ESPN college basketball expert Chad Ford. Only 60 players were drafted.

The Terre Haute, Ind., native led the Bobcats to the NCAA Tournament in his only season in Athens. He led the team in scoring with 17.1 points per game and was named the MVP of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

Bassett averaged 29 points per game in the tournament, which the Bobcats won as the ninth-seeded team – the lowest seed ever to do so.

But shortly after the season, Bassett was arrested and charged with assault for punching a local bar nouncer in the nose.

Bassett did not answer repeated phone calls from The Post about the draft and the New Orleans Hornets.
