Keeping an eye on the NFL: who’s new, who’s out, what’s next

By Eldon Khorshidi

It may be June, but it’s never too early to get excited about the upcoming NFL season. A new year means a clean slate and a fresh start. Every team is 0-0 and ready to win.

Both the New York Jets and the New York Giants have brought in new assets to bolster their squads and once again make a championship push.

Jets

After a 9-7 regular season finish last year, the Jets surprised many NFL experts and advanced to the AFC Championship game. Their success in 2009 therefore means high expectations this year.

In the backfield, they let go of Thomas Jones and brought in LaDainian Tomlinson. The Jets led the league in rushing with 172 yards per game; now they’re hoping Tomlinson is ready to maintain that success.

Through a trade with the Chargers, they acquired cornerback Antonio Cromartie to play opposite field of the best cornerback in the NFL, Darrelle Revis. Pairing him with Revis makes the Jets’ top-rated defense even deadlier.

The trade for Santonio Holmes seems to be a steal, as they gave a late draft pick for a former Super Bowl hero.

Finally, the Jets needed a pass rusher, so they signed former Dolphin Jason Taylor. It will be interesting to see how a former division rival plays in New York.

Giants

The Giants were very unpredictable in 2009. They started off as one of the best teams in the NFC (5-0), but only managed an 8-8 finish. The NFC East has only gotten stronger and the Giants’ schedule this year is daunting. Many critics are wondering if Eli Manning can once again lead the team to a successful season.

But it’s not all about Manning.

The Giants have a sub-par receiving crew, so the running game will be instrumental in deciding the team’s future. Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw will lead the way in the backfield, looking to improve on the team’s 114.8 rush yards per game.

The Giants defense drafted Jason Pierre-Paul and added Antrel Rolle in free agency, both to improve the team and also to stiffen competition at those positions. Now even veterans like Osi Umenyiora must fight for a spot.
