Final phase of park renovation will begin in December

Given up all hopes of spending an idyllic day in postcard-ready Washington Square Park? Fear not: the park’s construction, which began in 2009, is in the second of three phases and will enter the third phase in December.

According to a press release, the second phase will consist of restoring landscaping, plantings and flowerbeds and replacing excess asphalt in the remaining three quadrants of the park.

The playground in the northeast quadrant will also be upgraded, and a new play area in the southwest quadrant will incorporate mounds to improve sightlines and carpet-style synthetic turf for safety.

The third phase of construction is expected to begin this December and will include building a park house with a comfort station for the public and added space for the Parks maintenance staff.

While some students expressed excitement at the prospect of a newly renovated park, others were indifferent.

“I’m really looking forward to having the extra space to hang out, relax and do work in the fresh air,” said Silver School of Social Work junior Elizabeth Fritz. “It’ll be much more pleasant aesthetically as well.”

But CAS junior Calvin Cupino said the renovation of the park will have no impact on him.

“I don’t really think I’ve ever known the park as a whole so I don’t feel that it really affects me,” Cupino said. “I don’t personally feel that there is anything in particular to look forward to.”
