Editorial: Hogan leaves UConn to mixed reaction

By The Daily Campus Editorial Board

With former President Hogan’s abrupt departure, the university is left in an uncertain state, unable to progress without a permanent president at its helm. Now is a time to examine the results of Hogan’s presidency, as well as set expectations for any future leader of UConn.

Although Hogan had some distinct successes during his tenure, several of his latter decisions fell short of what the student body expected from its president.

Hogan’s legacy ought to be a reminder to the future president; whoever steps up to lead UConn needs to realize that there is a balance between being a beloved figurehead and an actual leader.

One of Hogan’s strengths was his unique form of bonding with students. As president he was a visible figure on campus, always appearing at various school-sponsored events and willing to take pictures and talk with anyone who approached him. Another hallmark of his time at the university was the decision to start construction on buildings along Fairfield Way that will replace Arjona and Monteith.

But there are several marks on his administration that ought to be addressed. The cost of tuition has been steadily rising over the past few years. Little has been done to recognize student concerns, culminating in protests and widespread discontent.

The debacle over Gulley Hall is another problem. First, there was the asbestos contamination that occurred during renovations last summer. Then, the costs of renovation: $450,000 – including a $4,125 rug – for a building Hogan uses as his office. Finally, there were the six life size cutouts of Hogan, priced at $3,500, that the university purchased during the spring.

The timing of Hogan’s departure also needs to be addressed. The semester had just drawn to a close when his announcement was made. Many students heard about from the media before the university sent out an official announcement. Hogan has left the university in a lurch at a vulnerable time – when we should be concentrating on improving the university. We need competent, experienced leadership, not a sudden scramble to find a replacement.

The next president should take note of Hogan’s achievements. Hogan has set a standard for a visible, relatable president who is willing to talk to each student as an individual. On the other hand, a long term vision, administration accountability, and more effective leadership are also necessary. The university deserves an explanation and a promise. Hopefully, the next president will both be able to continue Hogan’s successes and fix his failings.
