Two new speed cameras installed

In May, Baltimore County police began issuing citations for the speed cameras installed in school zones around the county. As of June 21, BCPD will issue warnings for the two newest installations near Lansdowne High School and Dulaney High School, according to a BCPD press release.

The Baltimore County Council passed legislation in September authorizing the use of speed cameras in school zones in Baltimore County and began operating two of an eventual 15 camera locations this past February. Right now, four are in operation.

The cameras will operate from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and will issue citations to drivers going more than 12 miles per hour over the posted speed limit, according to the press release. Tickets, not points, will be the consequence for surpassing the limit.

Cameras in the county continue to operate through summer months at the same times and locations to protect summer school students.

“Chief Jim Johnson reminds the public that the speed camera program has one goal – public safety. It is meant to protect our school children and other residents from drivers who violate the law,” the release said. “By their comments at community meetings, in their e-mail messages, and through their contact with members of the Police Department, members of the public are demanding safe streets in Baltimore County.”
