Sooners headed to Virginia for Super Regional

By Chris Lusk

The No. 11 U. Oklahoma baseball team will head east to face Virginia in the Super Regionals of the NCAA baseball tournament this weekend.

The best-of-three series begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at Davenport Field in Charlottesville, Va.

The Cavaliers (50-12) beat St. John’s 5-3 on Monday afternoon to win the Charlottesville Regional and advance to the Super Regionals. Virginia, which received a No. 5 seed nationally, will host the Sooners because they have a higher seed.

The Sooners (47-15) could have hosted the Super Regional if St. John’s had won.

OU swept through its regional in Norman this weekend with three one-run wins to reach its second Super Regional since the tournament’s format was changed in 1999.

Virginia entered the NCAA tournament ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the national polls, and finished first in the ACC. This is the program’s seventh-straight NCAA appearance and it is looking to return to the College World Series for the second time after making it in 2009.

OU head coach Sunny Golloway said Virginia is one of the nation’s top programs, and his team is prepared to face Cavaliers.

“It’s going to be a tremendous challenge to go out to Charlottesville,” Golloway said. “We are looking forward to competing.”

The only previous meeting between the Sooners and Virginia came Jan. 31, 1999, when the Cavaliers defeated the Sooners, 12-4, in the ACC-Disney Baseball Bash.

OU, which has a 73-62 all-time record in the NCAA tournament, is making its second trip to the Super Regionals in Golloway’s five-year tenure. Golloway has lead OU to a 14-9 record in the NCAA tournament.

The Sooners captured the National Championship in 1994 and won its first title in 1951. OU is one of 13 schools to win multiple national titles in Division I baseball
