As STDs Surge, Quest Diagnostics Debunks Common Myths; Highlights Importance of STD Testing

New CDC data shows that people avoided STD testing during the pandemic –

People aged 15-24 years make up half of all STD cases

If you think the quarantines that kept people from dating and sex mean you’re less likely to catch an STD, think again. The pandemic may have caused a dip in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the US very early on, but new data reveals that the decline was short lived. A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that cases of STDs decreased during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic but increased by the end of 2020. And people between the ages of 15-24 made up more than half (53%) of all reported cases of STDs.

Rates of syphilis and gonorrhea, two common STDs, climbed. And while the report showed declines in chlamydia, another common STD, experts are quick to point out that it is likely due to a decrease in screening, rather than a drop in actual cases.

Quest Diagnostics, the world’s leading provider of diagnostic information services, is breaking down common myths about STDs and sharing simple steps to take to protect your sexual health. Just remember S.T.D.:

• Start by getting back to care
• Test to know if you have an STD
• Do get treatment to protect your health and others

“Too many young people are at a high risk of STDs, but they may not know it or understand how important it is to be tested and treated, even when they lack symptoms. Reluctance to discuss risk with a healthcare provider is a common barrier, but the pandemic has added another layer of complication,” said Damian “Pat” Alagia, III, MD, an OB/GYN and medical director of women’s health for Quest Diagnostics. “The good news is that there are services available for individuals, including college students, that provide direct access to STD testing without the need to visit a doctor’s office first, so they can get the screening and treatment they need if they put off care during the pandemic, have personal privacy concerns, or are uncomfortable discussing their sexual history with a healthcare provider face to face.”

Myth #1: No symptoms means no STD.

STDs are often silent and without symptoms. In fact, up to 50% of men and 90% of women with chlamydia don’t show symptoms, and about 80% of women with gonorrhea have no symptoms.[1][2][3] The only way to know for sure if you have an STD is to get tested.

Myth #2: I would know if my partner had an STD.

This goes along with myth #1. You usually can’t see that someone has an STD – even a doctor can’t tell by looking at people. And it’s possible your partner may have an STD and not know it. Reminder: people don’t always have symptoms.

Myth #3: STDs don’t have serious health effects.

While college students may be more focused on pregnancy prevention than starting families, understanding the potential for long term health effects is important. If left unchecked, STDs like chlamydia and gonorrhea – which are curable with treatment – can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease in women and cause infertility in all people.

Myth #4: If my doctor thought I had an STD, he or she would have tested me for it.

Not necessarily. Some younger people are uncomfortable or embarrassed to have a frank conversation about their sexual behavior with their doctors, are not honest about their sexual history, and may not understand their STD risk. On the flip side, past research by Quest Diagnostics found gaps in care among doctors, with annual screening guidelines sometimes overlooked, especially if someone doesn’t have symptoms.

Myth #5: My partner and I are exclusive, so I don’t need to be tested.

In fact, if you and your partner have each had sex before, you are both at risk unless you both got tested before you became intimate. According to the CDC, all sexually active women under the age of 25 should be screened once a year for chlamydia and gonorrhea, regardless of the number of sex partners, and all sexually active men who have sex with men should be tested at least once a year for syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea.

Myth #6: Getting tested is a hassle—and embarrassing.

Screening for STDs does not have to be daunting or embarrassing. Consumer-initiated testing services like QuestDirect from Quest Diagnostics allow people to purchase a test discreetly online, including tests for some of the most common STDs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. You can choose to share results with your doctor or talk with an independent physician about your results to come up with a plan that supports your health, including prescription treatment if appropriate. Other options include making an appointment with a primary care doctor or, for females, an OB/GYN, and many colleges have health clinics that may offer STD testing. The CDC also offers resources to find a testing site near you at GetTested.cdc.gov.

The thought of having an STD can be scary, but most are curable and catching them early is the best way to protect yourself and others. Knowledge is power. Just remember these simple steps: S.T.D.

Start by getting back to care. A majority of people put off preventive care during the pandemic.
Test to know if you have an STD. Remember, if sexually active, the only true way to know whether you have an STD is to get tested.
Do get treatment to protect your health and others. Even without symptoms, you can carry and spread an STD, and seeking testing and treatment is not something you need to be intimidated about.

Travel Tips for a Safer Spring Break During the COVID-19 Pandemic

COVID-19 surges around the world are leading to new travel restrictions and uncertainty about travel. Cities, states and countries continue to change their travel requirements. But what hasn’t changed is the desire to take a break from school and have a fun spring break.

With spring break right around the corner, and many people looking to finalize their travel plans, Quest Diagnostics, the world’s leading provider of diagnostic information services, is offering travel tips to help you have a safer spring break during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Evaluate Travel Risk

There are multiple factors to consider when evaluating where to travel for spring break. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides an exhaustive list of travel destinations around the world and ranks them from Level 1 (Low Risk) to Level 4 (Very High Risk). The CDC recommends avoiding non-essential travel to popular spring break destinations such as Mexico, Jamaica and the Bahamas, which are currently at Level 4. Pick a destination with low COVID-19 positivity and transmission rates when possible.

Choose Your Travel Companions Wisely

If you plan to travel to visit friends or family members, you may be tempted to hold a big gathering. However, when planning a party or other event, keep in mind that when large numbers of people get together, especially indoors or without the use of masks and social distancing, risk increases. Vaccination can significantly, but doesn’t completely, reduce this risk. Socializing with the same people during your trip to avoid mixing with others who may have an unknown COVID-19 status is another important safety measure.

You may also want to talk with your travel companions to ensure you share similar attitudes about safety measures, like vaccination and masking.

“It can be awkward, but don’t be afraid to ask, ‘what are your thoughts about how to be safe amid COVID-19 during our trip?’” said Jeffrey Dlott, MD, Medical Director, QuestDirect. “Otherwise, you may end up traveling with someone whose ideas and behaviors conflict with yours, causing undue tension and stress when both of you just want to relax and have fun.”

Test Before You Leave

Testing is a good way to understand your COVID-19 status before traveling to a destination and potentially getting sick or spreading the virus to others. Self-directed testing through services such as QuestDirect, from Quest Diagnostics provide options for molecular (PCR/NAAT) and rapid antigen testing. It is important to check requirements for your destination as some may require a specific type of test.

Understand Your Testing Requirements to Return Home

Proctored COVID-19 is required for some travel, including international travelers coming to the U.S., according to CDC guidelines. Unlike most at-home COVID-19 tests, proctored testing involves a telehealth visit in which a healthcare professional guides you in collecting a specimen and reads the results virtually, which enables you to receive a certified report. Quest offers a proctored at-home COVID-19 rapid antigen test proctored observation from anywhere in the world. This is available for purchase on QuestDirect™, the company’s self-directed testing platform. Individuals will receive a lab report that may be used for international travel and for return to work or school programs.

Don’t forget the basics

While it can be easy to brush off safety measures on any vacation, masking (preferably with an N95 or KN95 mask), frequent hand washing and social distancing, especially when indoors, continue to be important tools for reducing risk to yourself and others. Most of all, if you haven’t been vaccinated, doing so well before your trip is the best way to protect yourself and others.

Whether you long to see loved ones or dip your toes in the ocean, using your best judgement and taking basic precautions will help you stay safe – and have a good time.

5 Korean dramas to watch after ‘Squid Game’

korean dramas

Jose Gonzalez-Campelo/The Cougar

Following the international success of the critically acclaimed series “Squid Game,” many Netflix users are eager to dive into the world of Korean dramas, but some don’t know where to start.

Fortunately, Netflix’s vast selection includes a multitude of different genres, making Korean dramas accessible to all viewers of different tastes. Here are five notable Korean dramas to get started.

Sweet Home

Based on the popular webcomic of the same name, “Sweet Home” is set within a run-down apartment complex in an apocalyptic universe. Rather than turning into zombies, those who are infected are transformed into distinctive and horrendous monsters.

“Sweet Home” focuses on Cha Hyun Soo, a suicidal and newly orphaned high school graduate. After being infected, Hyun Soo finds that he is able to resist total monsterization and is able to use his newly found supernatural abilities to the benefit of mankind, but first, he must convince the tenants that he is still human.

Perhaps the most CGI-intensive Korean drama to date, this series is highly recommended for those who are seeking a unique horror drama that still encapsulates the emotional depth that Korean dramas are known for.

Crash Landing on You

Among the abundance of romance-oriented Korean dramas, “Crash Landing on You” stands out as the third highest-rated drama in South Korean cable television history.

Yoon Se-Ri, the illegitimate daughter of an affluent business tycoon, is chosen over her siblings to inherit her father’s business due to her success as the CEO of her own company. Due to a paragliding accident, Se-Ri crash lands over the Korean Demilitarized Zone and is found by a North Korean soldier, Ri Jeong-Hyeok, who she then blackmails into keeping her hidden.

Jeong-Hyeok and his subordinates must pass Se-Ri off as Jeong-Hyeok’s new fiancé until they can safely smuggle her to the other side, while Se-Ri’s siblings eagerly vie for her position back in South Korea.

“Crash Landing on You” is a refreshing take on the star-crossed lovers trope, and boasts extremely well-written characters whose depth and development keep up with the exceptional plot.

Mr. Sunshine

The sixth highest-rated drama in Korean cable television history, “Mr. Sunshine” is sure to impress even the most scrutinous viewer with its critically acclaimed cinematography and poignant storytelling.

Eugene Choi, a high-ranking U.S. Marine corps officer, returns to Joseon (present-day Korea) on a mission after escaping a brutal life as a child slave. During his time there, he falls in love with Go Ae-Shin, the granddaughter of an exalted aristocrat, who disregards her noble status by crusading as a gunslinger for the Righteous Army (Joseon’s resistance).

“Mr. Sunshine” is a fictional take on history that will both excite and break the hearts of its viewers, and is highly recommended for those who enjoy watching shows that explore deeper real-world problems or fall under the historical fiction genre.

It’s Okay to Not Be Okay

Named one of the best international shows of 2020 by the New York Times, “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” is an extremely character-based story that focuses on mental health.

Moon Gang-Tae is a psychiatric nurse whose entire life has revolved around caring for his older autistic brother, Sang-Tae. After their mother was murdered, Gang-Tae has taken it upon himself to live only for Sang-Tae and has perfected maintaining a happy image for the sake of his brother when in actuality, he harbors deep resentment towards his deceased mother for his depression and solitude.

The brothers’ paths cross with Ko Moon-Young, Sang-Tae’s favorite author who writes children’s books known for gruesome content. Ko Moon-Young struggles with an antisocial personality disorder but finds herself wanting to show Gang-Tae how to live selfishly.

The trio navigates what it means to care for another person while caring for yourself, and soon discovers that their paths have been unfavorably intertwined since childhood. Nominated for an International Emmy Award, “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” features stellar acting and remarkable characters whose journeys will leave you emotionally wrecked.

My Name

An 8-episode series, “My Name” is the ideal Korean drama for those who are seeking a binge-watch that’s filled with action and excitement.

“My Name” focuses on Yoon Ji-Woo, a high school student whose father is brutally killed on her birthday. Prior to his death, Ji-Woo’s father served as the right-hand man to the notorious drug ring leader, Choi Mu-Jin, of Dongcheonpa.

Overwhelmed with a desire for revenge, Ji-Woo enlists the help of Mu-Jin and trains to become a killer under his tutelage. Years later, Ji-Woo has risen to the top of the ranks and is sent by Mu-Jin to infiltrate the police force under a false identity in order to find and execute the cop responsible for her father’s death.

As Ji-Woo begins to form a genuine relationship with a detective, she is faced with the reality that she’s already lost her youth to her pursuit of revenge and that she could lose more than just her name if she fulfills it, but anyone who defects from Dongcheonpa becomes the next target.

Although “My Name” is a considerably short series, the story is well-developed, features a strong female lead and captivating fighting sequences.

Teens Demand More Resources for Their Mental Health; DoSomething.org and The Allstate Foundation Launch New Campaign to Empower Youth

‘It’s (Not) All in Your Head’ program developed by DoSomething members will provide tools to help students with pandemic-related trauma and shine a spotlight on the importance of mental health support for students in schools

NEW YORK, October 22, 2021 – DoSomething.org, the largest organization exclusively for young people and social change, announced a new program, “It’s (Not) All in Your Head,” today with The Allstate Foundation. This program created by young people for young people through a virtual hackathon will provide youth with opportunities to explore diverse and youth-friendly mental health resources and activate them to advocate for additional funding for mental health resources in their schools and communities.

“We are thrilled to partner with The Allstate Foundation again to educate youth about the importance of owning their mental health,” said DeNora Getachew, CEO of DoSomething.org. “Young people have been clear about the need for additional mental health resources to help them navigate this disrupted time. We are excited to elevate this youth-created program to provide diverse resources to ensure that students who have experienced pandemic-related trauma have the support they need to thrive in schools.”

In high schools, counselors who serve students of color predominantly must serve 34 more students each year than a counselor who serves fewer students of color. At least 27 states are shortchanging students of color, students from low-income families, or both (The Education Trust, 2019). Coinciding with World Mental Health Day – which is on October 10th – this program lets students take the lead in highlighting the importance of providing diverse mental health resources. Students and schools will share materials that directly address racial inequities for students of color accessible via a QR Code, text, or a URL embedded in the flyer. Students will also be provided materials to encourage them to advocate for mental health in their schools and districts.

“Youth are the leaders of tomorrow, and their wellbeing is our priority. We are dedicated to empowering them with the skills and resources to be compassionate leaders in society and amongst their peers,” said Laura Freveletti, Senior Program Officer for The Allstate Foundation. “We are so proud to partner with DoSomething and the inspiring young people who created this campaign to increase access to mental health resources in schools and to help young people lead the change they want to see in their communities.”

This partnership results from a recent hackathon that aimed to challenge young people to solve various societal issues, including mental health.

“I’m really grateful for the chance to participate in this hackathon and to have the opportunity to put my team’s mental health initiative into action. Slowly mental health is being talked about more and it’s important to have both short-term and long-term solutions to reinforce these conversations,” said hackathon team member Madeleine Yu-Phelps. “Mental health issues can manifest in a number of ways particularly in school, and so by having a direct way to seek help, a small ripple effect in bettering mental health support and education is already being made.”

One out of every four adolescents suffers from mental health issues – ranging from anxiety to depression (Prothero, 2020). Many of these same students report being more likely to ask for help if their school provides mental health services. Through this partnership, DoSomething and The Allstate Foundation are equipping youth with the resources they need to own their mental health and activating them to advocate for equitable mental health access short- and long-term.

With Mental Health on the Rise Among College Students, GradGuard Tuition Insurance Provides Viable Options for Families

GradGuard’s student insurance program provides refunds when colleges may not to students who medically withdraw due to mental health conditions and other covered reasons.

Phoenix, AZ (July 21, 2021): GradGuard, one of the largest providers of student insurance programs in the country, has broken another barrier in the tuition protection landscape by becoming the first and only program in the country to cover mental health as a condition. The growth in student mental health concerns looms as another risk to the investments families make when paying for college.

“The growth of mental health conditions in college students is a real risk to the investment families are making in higher education,” said John Fees, Co-founder, and Managing Director of GradGuard. “Though colleges and universities are providing robust services to support their students, they are unlikely to provide a refund if a student cannot complete the semester.”

“If a student has a controlled pre-existing condition like serious anxiety or mental health conditions, and they are medically cleared to attend school, we will cover them. If they must withdraw under the recommendation of a licensed professional in their state, tuition insurance can cover their housing, their tuition, and student fees.  GradGuard’s tuition insurance can help reduce the stress students face in these situations and help everyone focus on the well-being of the student.”

GradGuard’s coverage of mental health comes as data confirms the spike of mental health cases on college and university campuses. Among the troubling trends:

• 2020 report by the American College Health Association found more than half of nearly 9,000 students surveyed experienced anxiety or depression

• A nationwide study published by the Journal of Adolescent Health found that rates of moderate to severe anxiety and depression among U.S. college students rose substantially over the last few years — from 18% and 23%, to 34% and 41%, respectively.

• 2020 survey by American Council on Education found 68% of college and university presidents say student mental health and well-being is top concern

Like it did with COVID-19, GradGuard – thanks to its partnership with Allianz Global Assistance – is the only insurance program provider in the country to reimburse up to 100% of the financial losses when a student needs to withdraw because of a covered reason such as covered mental or covered physical illness.

Most higher education institutions only provide a partial refund of tuition during the first five weeks of a semester, and virtually no schools provide refunds for academic fees or housing, however, GradGuard’s tuition insurance can provide a refund for the total cost of college when a school may not.

“As we have been since our beginning, we’re going to be there for schools and families to support students on their path towards graduation,” said Fees. “If COVID-19 demonstrates one thing, schools and students are financially vulnerable.  It should be clear to students and families that higher education institutions cannot afford to provide refunds and families should not expect to get a refund if their student is forced leave school because of mental health issues, CO1VID-19, accidents, injuries, or many other reasons, including the unexpected death of a tuition payor.”

“The idea of losing money can create even more financial stress for students and their parents. GradGuard enables students and families to make the decision on whether to withdraw is based on the well-being of their student and not just the money at risk.

GradGuard’s tuition insurance provides affordable coverage up to 100% of the cost of college including student housing, tuition and academic charges” said Fees. “In addition, each policy also includes Student Life Assistance that helps families through the logistics that may accompany an unexpected student withdrawal.

ClassRanked takes guesswork out of messy class registration process.

Schedule Planning Just Got Easier.

Students needing help picking their classes is something that happens at universities around the nation. ClassRanked.com was designed to alleviate the stress around the registration process and give students data behind which classes to choose.

Co-founders of ClassRanked, Hayden Hall, Dilan Trivedi, and Max Labaton are familiar with the difficulty of course registration. The three friends founded the site after spending hours going through outdated reviews, asking others for advice, and messaging different groups on campus to find their perfect schedules.

They then built the ClassRanked platform to offer students a way of seeing data provided from universities to make more informed decisions on course enrollment. Now, the site is available at over 400 colleges and universities, allowing students to see grade distributions to understand how students in past semesters performed in classes.

“We had faced the same problem millions of other students face each semester when choosing classes,” co-founder Hayden Hall said about the creation of ClassRanked. “We realized that students are left in the dark and wanted to give them a way of using objective data to perfect their schedules.” ClassRanked provides that solution to students: the ability to see past grade distributions by class and by professor, coupled with user reviews and course recommendation tools.

Unlike the typical class review sites, the ClassRanked platform does not rely on word-of-mouth experiences left by often disgruntled students. Rather user reviews can be used to contextualize the historical grading data that is offered by class or professor. “For the first time ever, students can see how past classes performed and can use that to predict the difficulty and viability of a class for their schedule,” Hall continued.

Hall encourages students to join the more than 250,000 ClassRanked members who rely on the site as a must use utility for students who are planning their academic futures and making the most of the investment they are making in a higher education.

About ClassRanked.com
Launched in 2019 by classmates from Duke University, ClassRanked is a technology enabled platform that unlocks value for students, employers and higher education institutions through building the largest data set of students’ actual academic performance in courses offered by more than 300,000 faculty at more than 400 colleges and universities.

San Francisco Thought Leader Shares the Results of His Scholarly Inquiry into Economic Principles That Create Wealth

Multi-faceted Educator/Entrepreneur/Musician

David Parker – “a Classical Liberal” – Finds Common Ground with

Progressives on Identifying Strategies & Distinctions

For Every Individual to Move from Financial Challenge to Prosperity

“David Parker’s Income and Wealth offers a persuasive, personal take on big issues, public and private. Parker lays out clear thinking and antidotes to the rhetorical poisons in which we are forced to swim these days. [He reminds us] that free people benefit each other in their voluntary interactions, and … anything more than ‘that government that governs least’ hurts us all.”

Bart Lee
Late Adjunct Professor of Law & Economics
Golden Gate University

(SAN FRANCISCO, CA – March 16, 2021) After a challenging and disruptive year, millions of Americans – indeed, people worldwide – are desperately searching for the wisdom and insight that can help them rise above the financial problems facing every sector of business and every individual. Fortunately, entrepreneur and lifelong educator David Parker is now sharing the perspective and principles on which he has built a successful career as an entrepreneur and investor in INCOME AND WEALTH: David Parker Essays – Volume One” (Waterside Productions – February 16, 2021). The lessons that Parker shares with readers in this thought-provoking, transformational work encapsulate the author’s 40-year study of economic history and principles.

When he began his teaching career, Parker broke with conventional wisdom. He chose a different path from the majority of his colleagues in the educational field.  Rather than place his faith and his future in the teachers’ union or the government, Parker’s intellectual curiosity drove him to explore why government intervention in any aspect of our lives – from education to healthcare – is doomed to failure, and how individual action, regardless of annual income, can lead to the accumulation of wealth. While some might label his political views, especially his disdain for government intervention, “conservative,” Parker calls himself a “classical liberal” – adamant that citizens should not be forced to support programs inconsistent with free market economics. The result of Parker’s scholarly inquiry into the proper role of government in our lives — Income and Wealth — is the result of 30 years of study and 30,000 hours of annotated reading of the world’s foremost experts on the subject of political economy including Aristotle, Adam Smith, F.A. Hayek and Ayn Rand.

Known for his “unconventional wisdom,” Parker shares common ground with many individuals currently identified as “Progressives,” in his belief that virtually everyone – even those earning minimum-wage income – have the opportunity to create wealth.  “Most people in this country don’t realize they are living way beyond their means,” Parker says. The prescription he advocates for wealth creation may not be easy – but it is certainly effective. He urges all young people, regardless their earning power, to invest half their annual income. “Even those not especially creative or brilliant,” he says, “will generate significant income from their investments within ten years.”

A Sampling of David Parker’s Views

As the author shares in Income and Wealth, individual responsibility and initiative are essential keys to achieving financial success – and, in fact, is the only sustainable path to this goal. As readers will discover, Parker not only presents a compelling case for the benefits of free market economics, and he also shares principles and insights that can be used as the building blocks for a step-by-step plan for financial prosperity.

As “a classical liberal,” Parker believes our government should be based on a foundation of social, political and economic freedom.  “Freedom in these three areas is fundamentally interconnected,” Parker says. “The degree to which you restrict one – for example, constraining economic freedom through a policy such as rent control – inevitably results in an equal constraint on the other two areas.” Further, he says it is important to remember that this nation was built on simple, fundamental principles. The U.S. Constitution, for example, is written on a single page. Our government’s tendency to overcomplicate issues and interfere in the free market has been a disaster – as we have seen.”

In addition, he notes, America’s business community has no lack of ingenuity when it comes to circumventing government policy and law – regardless of the political party pushing for such regulation. This fact, Parker believes, underscores the preeminence of free market forces, as business naturally seeks to be free of government constraint.  To support his position, he notes that in any field or program, “when government is involved, it costs more – two or three times what it would cost if left to free market solutions.”  If healthcare was a typical ‘market commodity,’ Parker says, “consumers would bargain for the best price, just as they bargain for everything else, and sky-high health care costs would come down to realistic levels.”

Government intervention in our nation’s education system has produced similarly disastrous results, Parker says – and, again, shares common ground with Progressives in calling for action to correct this crisis.  In an interesting twist that might surprise his fellow conservative thinkers, Parker sides with Progressive politicians including Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, in calling America’s student debt situation a full-scale crisis. As was frequently mentioned during recent Presidential debates, student debt is a huge pressure on millions of young people just entering the workforce. Parker notes that due to government subsidy of our nation’s colleges, administrators at those institutions have lost any ability to budget properly and bring prices back down to earth.

After reading this important new book, readers will have no doubt that “income” and “wealth” are entirely different things, and that any limits upon the first actually has no bearing upon one’s ability to achieve the second.

Additional Praise for “Income and Wealth”

“A fascinating, hard hitting treatise on the dynamic between money, society, and basic human nature. It’s a timely read in these highly polarized times, an unemotional and data-based explanation – which has indelibly changed my opinion of the way things work.”

Ahmad Mohazab, RA, NCARB, LEED AP
TECTA Associates

“Sure to draw ire from both sides of the political and economic spectrum, Parker seamlessly threads a practical theory of wealth and income through history, micro-, macro-, and development economics. A completely fresh take on the modern economy, weaving elements of Ayn Rand’s laissez-faire Objectivism with University of Chicago Neoclassical models and brought down to earth by Parker’s 40+ years teaching inner-city schools.”

About Author David Parker

David Parker began his career in education at the age of 24 and served students of San Francisco’s inner-city public elementary schools for 40 years as a music teacher, followed by 10 years as a volunteer. While pursuing his career in education, Parker also became a very successful real estate investor. It was success in business that focused his writing, teaching and career as a professional musician. Parker’s career as a musician is similarly impressive. He spent 20 years as member of the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra and 15 years as leader of the Dave Parker Sextet, which has headlined at San Francisco’s Fillmore Jazz Festival.

As Income and Wealth approached publication, Parker was already hard at work on his next book.  His thoughtful essays have been featured in The Economist, The Financial Times and several prestigious law journals. In addition to being an author, entrepreneur and investor, David Parker is also a proud father and grandfather.  In his later years, his mother Gertrud Parker – who passed away earlier this year at the age of 96 – served as a powerful inspiration, with her international acclaim an artist as well as a civic leader in San Francisco.
