Michigan Tech Men’s Hockey ends game in shut out

The Huskies defeat LSSU; adding another shut out to their record

The Huskies shutout Lake Superior State University 2-0 on Saturday, Nov. 12 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena after losing in a shootout Friday night. These two games improved the Huskies record this season  to 6-3-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the CCHA.

Blake Pietila made 20 saves in the shutout game marking his 14th career shutout and 4th to the Lakers.

David Jankowski led the team to an early lead scoring his first ever goal as a Husky at 4:49 into the game. He was assisted by Arvid Caderoth who fed him the pass and Topi Heiskanen with a dump-in from the point.

In reference to Friday night’s loss, Jankowski said, “obviously we let that lead go in the third and we weren’t happy with that.” Jankowski continues in reference to Saturday’s game saying, “really big emphasis tonight on getting a lead early.”

Coach Joe Shawhan said, “Arvid made a really nice play to Jankowski, protected the puck, body shielded it, fake dropped his shoulder and then made a nice feed.”

The Huskies continuously outshot the Lakers at both games this weekend. Saturday’s game produced 14-7 shots in the second period with another goal shot by Trevor Russel. Russel stepped off the bench and shot a goal within a few seconds. Russel’s goal was assisted by Jack Works who fed Russel the puck from in front of the Zamboni door. Secondary assist was from Alex Nordstrom.

In reference to his goal, Russel said, “Came straight off the bench, Works was working hard in the corner, and he looked up and I was right there, called for it, and put it in the net.”

The Lakers were persistent in the third period with 10 shots on goal. Pietila was able to stop every shot, one of which had him diving to catch the puck in a shorthanded 2 on 1.

Shawhan said, “Lake State is a good team. They’re well-coached and they’re big and strong and have a lot  of skill. I feel fortunate that we were able to come out of the weekend with some success.”

The Huskies finished the weekend taking 4 of 6 conference points. LSSU now holds a record of 1-7-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the CCHA.

Michigan Tech goes on the road next weekend to play St. Thomas Nov. 18 and 19 in Minnesota.

Ridge Roamers host Keweenaw Climbing Competition

Michigan Tech student organization bi-annual event open to all.

The Ridge Roamers club of Michigan Tech is  hosting its bi-annual Keweenaw Climbing  Competition on Saturday, Nov. 12th from  9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the SDC climbing wall.  In this competition, participants will demonstrate their climbing ability on various difficulty divisions on the roped climbs. The club has been hosting this event for over 15 years.

The club has organized the difficulty divisions by youth, beginner, intermediate, and advanced.  The event is open to anyone who pays the $10  early entry fee, or $15 entry fee at the door.

Each individual competing has two attempts to climb as high as they can on three different routes. Each of the routes is on different vertical terrain including a completely vertical wall, a wall with a triangular bulge, and a wall that contains a 10 ft roof section.

Each climber will receive a score corresponding to how high they were able to reach on each respective route and ranked from highest to lowest. The top three climbers in each division choose from a variety of prizes. This year, Studio  13 of downtown Houghton has sponsored the  event with a few prizes according to Nolan  Ruble, president of the Ridge Roamers club.

“We try to develop a welcoming atmosphere  with this event to allow anyone to come and see what they’re capable of,” Ruble said.

To encourage fair competition between  divisions, Ruble noted that if a participant climbs to the top of two routes in their respective division, they are automatically advanced to the next difficulty division. This prevents climbers  signing up for divisions that are too easy for their skill level and dominating the competition.

Last Friday night, the club hosted a pizza party  event where volunteers went to the SDC to help  take down all the climbing holds and power wash  them in preparation of the competition  according to Anthony Bashur, 6th year

mechanical engineering student and member of  Ridge Roamers.

Ruble noted that the Ridge Roamers did not host their normal open climb hours while members of the club were creating the competition climbing routes.

The event typically attracts upwards of 60  participants, most of which are Michigan Tech students but many of which are community members. Climbers from the Marquette area even travel the distance to participate in the event.

Bashur noted that the respective climbing clubs of Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan  University enjoy the opportunity for friendly competition at the event.

Ultra Marathon Club hosts their first trail race

All new student organization holds inaugural Distance race event

The new and emerging Keweenaw Ultramarathon Club of Michigan Tech is hosting an ultra-marathon trail race this Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Tech Trails. There are three options for distance which are 5k, 25k, and 50k. The cost of admission, which is $10 for students and $20 for community members, will be going towards further developing the club’s membership benefits as well as covering the cost to organize the event.

The Keweenaw Ultra Marathon Club was started by fifth-year mechanical engineering student, Cade Meyer, late last spring. He says there is no cost for joining the club and because of this, there is not currently any funding to further develop the club’s scope. With the funding from the race, Meyer hopes to be able to help members by covering the entry costs of different races around the UP. The cost of admission to typical long-distance races is between $100-$200 according to Meyer.

Since last Spring, the club has gained 58 members, with upwards of 35 members attending their weekly group runs. These occur on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. at the Tech Trails. The advisor for the club is Ryan Towles, one of the Academic Advisors for the Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate department. Towles says at the end of each group run, the members have a potluck-style social.

The source of Meyer’s inspiration was a running group that he met in Milwaukee, WI while he was completing a Co-Op semester. He said that he didn’t have many friends in the area and was invited to run with the group. He enjoyed the community that they had created with a welcoming environment. There was also an  enthusiastic social aspect during and after the run. The group he ran with inspired him to participate in his first long distance race.

Meyer wanted to create this same type of community at Michigan Tech. He noticed that there were running clubs and organizations around the area, but none of them seemed to have the welcoming atmosphere that appealed to beginners. Meyer wanted to create this, so he decided to start his own club. He says, “the club aims to make running fun, and not just an environment to train hard for races.”

Towles is a life-long runner and is currently assistant coach for the cross-country and track for the Hancock Bulldogs. He has also been involved with the track team. He says he joined the club on one of the group runs where he was greeted by many of his students and peers. He asked Meyer if the club had an advisor, and decided to volunteer for the position.

Meyer has utilized his project management class and project team to organize this event in short notice. He said that he spends about 5-6 hours a week in preparation for the event with help from the executive board. The executive board includes Max Maas, Henry Campbell, Lucy Campbell, Cal McNabb, and Meyer’s project management class group.

Correction: A previous edition of this article identified Ryan Towles as a coach for the cross-country team at Tech. The article has been updated to identify Towles as assistant cross-country and track coach for the Hancock Bulldogs.

Men’s Football: Davenport University vs. MTU

After a strong start against Davenport University, the Michigan Tech football team ultimately fell to the  Panthers 38-52 on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The Huskies started the  game rushing 75 yards through 11 plays and a 1-yard touchdown run by Will Ark, Huskies’ quarterback.

During the kickoff, Owen Watson was able to recover a fumble overturning the possession once again.  Will Ark quickly turned this rush into a touchdown after finding Darius Willis on a 26-yard pass thrusting  the Huskies into an impressive 14-point lead.

Near the end of the first quarter, kicker Drew Wyble scored another three points giving the Huskies a  17-point lead at the first Quarter.

The Panthers quickly acquired momentum starting in the second quarter with two touchdown passes  made by Whittaker. One pass was completed by Preston Smith for 12 yards. Jake Livingstone caught the  other pass for 20 yards as the Huskies struggled to “leave our feet and slide off tackles” as head coach  Steve Olson said. This left the half time score at 24-14 Huskies.

The second half of the game was much tougher for the Huskies. Davenport’s quarterback, Whittaker,  had impressive accuracy in the pocket with great blocking from the offensive line as the Huskies  struggled to take down Livingstone and Demetrius Garrett.

A 14 point lead by the Panthers near the end of the fourth quarter put the pressure on the Huskies to  develop an eight-play rush that came to an end when Ark’s pass was intercepted with six minutes left in  the game. To end the game, Panther’s kicker, Brandon Gielow, scored a 32-yard field goal.

Though it was a tough loss for the Huskies, Will Ark had one of his best games yet this season scoring  two touchdowns and passing for 267 yards at 54% completion rate. He also assisted in 82 yards of  running through Alec Moriarty and Will Moriarty. Coach Olson was impressed to see “Will come out and  make good decisions, manage the clock and do things the right way.”

Annual Parade of Nations celebrates diversity of Keweenaw

The 33rd annual Parade of Nations and Multicultural Food Festival was held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, Sept. 17. The parade started at the Quincy Green in Hancock and continued through downtown Houghton and ended at the Dee Stadium where the Multicultural Food Festival was held. The two events serve to showcase the culture and countries represented in the Keweenaw.

The parade and food festival combined represented nearly 50 countries and 8 student organizations.  The student organizations represented include the Nepalese Student Organization, Muslim Student  Associations, Indian Students Association, Iranian Community, African Student Organization, Society of  Asian Scientists and Engineers, and Bangladeshi Student Organization.

Each of these organizations prepared traditional dishes from their respective cultures and sold them at the food festival. The funds raised from this event went back to each student organization for the use of funding future events.

Sagnik Maity, a student worker for the Parade of Nations committee, mentioned that “there were over 1000 local participants” that came to support the festivities. The committee printed 1000 menus for the  food festival and according to Maity “all of them were gone.”

The events are funded by the sale of event T-shirts. The design of the T-shirt was left to a community design competition that encompassed the theme of this year’s event: The World is One. The competition was won by Chiara Rapacci, a 17-year-old junior at Baraga High School. Rapacci is an Italian exchange student sponsored by the International Cultural Exchange Services (ICES).

There was also a multiculturalism essay contest for the event. The essay was open to high school seniors that planned to attend Michigan Tech. The prompt asked two questions; What does multiculturalism mean to you and why does it matter to you, to your community, to our country, to the world? The winner of the competition was Baraga High School’s Aidan Holley, 18. Holley wrote, “If both groups put  multiculturalism into effect for Baraga, it would create a more welcoming environment for either group  to be more open to each other, spreading even more culture to each other without the worries of being  slandered.”

Maity also mentioned, “these events promote a sense of harmony and community amongst the local  community.” He also explained how the Multicultural Dance did not occur this year. The dance has not been held since 2019 because of the uncertainty of the global pandemic. He hopes that this event can return in the coming years. This was the first-year return of the Multicultural Food Festival, however,  since the pandemic. The only restriction that differed from previous years was that the food was taken out only.
