From The Lode Editorial Staff

Since 1921, the mission of The Lode has been to inform the student body by producing equitable and honest news. As a student newspaper, The Lode is deeply committed to upholding the rights and privileges of free speech, but we also understand those rights and privileges come with enormous responsibilities and real-world consequences. As a news organization, we will continue to follow ethical guidelines and journalistic integrity.

During the previous semester, there was gross misuse of these rights leading to division and discomfort on campus. As members of the Michigan Technological University community, students hold the responsibility to support each other and refrain from exclusionary and hateful speech. Professors also hold a responsibility to host open discussion where students and staff are free to express their opinions while also fostering an inclusive and non-discriminatory environment. If you are uncomfortable with a professor in the classroom, please adhere to Michigan Tech’s guidelines, found at this link: https://www.mtu.edu/diversity-center/resources/free-speech/.

Please refer to the following links for more information about nationally-accepted journalistic integrity policies and freedom of speech: Society of Professional Journalists at https://www.spj.org/ethicscode.asp and American Civil Liberties Union at https://www.aclu.org/issues/free-speech

Lewd special satirical article: Michigan Tech Lode to return to old ways

Disclaimer: This article is a part of The Lewd, a biannual satirical project put together by The Lode staff, typically published the week before finals. Opinions presented in these articles do not reflect The Lode values.

The ridiculous staff for the Michigan Tech Lode have finally been brought to their senses. Early afternoon yesterday, it was announced that the Lode will be following the older format that the paper used to follow in the 70’s. For those who may be unaware, the superior form of the Lode from the 1970’s and earlier featured a healthy dose of porn ads on almost every page. Students rejoice at the prospect of having the Lode as a source of new “content”. Another aspect of the old ways we at the Lewd hope to bring back is the publishing of letters to the editor. Finally, students will be able to post their ideodic ideas for all of campus to cringe at. Oh yes, people totally care about what you have to say. It’s not like you’re an infant in an adult body with no rational thought.

100 years ago: WYLLYS’S CO. CEASES TO WORK THE ISLE ROYALE ROCK PILES

Saturday November 10th was the last time that the entire WI class spent on the Isle Royale Rock Piles. This does not mean, however, that operations will cease altogether, for as long as the weather permits the class will conduct individual operations in search of the rarer crystals.

Hundreds of specimens have been collected by every one in the class. One man even used his Ford Runabout to haul rocks home. He evidently intends to surpass all previous records in the number and variety of crystals handed in.

Despite the energetic efforts of the class the piles of rock remaining seem as large as ever. Mr. W.A. Seaman thinks that he can continue separations there for many reasons to come. The domeykite outcrop however is being used up rapidly. If no new deposits are discovered, underground mining will be necessary in a few decades, and it is feared that the Mining Department will then want to pass on some of the methods used.

The work this year was confined mostly to the Old Huron and Number One rock piles, these considered the most promising places. Evidently the previous classes were rather careless, for large finds of some of the rare crystals are being reported by many of the fellows.
