Prospect Park considers park space along LRT

As plans for development along Metro Transit’s Green Line light rail move ahead, some hope that space is set aside for green spaces and parks. 
Now that the Green Line is more than one year old — and as plans for development along the line take shape — some hope to add a green space north of the Prospect Park Station. The idea is in the early stages of planning, but proponents say the inclusion of a park in any redevelopment plans for the Prospect Park area would be beneficial.

A University of Minnesota pediatrics professor is printing off pieces of organs in hopes they’ll help treat cancer.
Angela Panoskaltsis-Mortari, who specializes in blood and marrow transplantation, has been working with a Biobots bioprinter — one of only 20 in the world — to create a piece of esophagus out of human cells.

City denies elevator demolition

In June, the University agreed to purchase a 5-acre property and a 114-year-old grain elevator near the TCF Bank Stadium.

Businesses thrive on Green Line

Despite a loss in sales for many businesses dealing with construction along the Green Line light rail , a new report showed Stadium Village businesses did better than most.

In a report released by the Business Resources Collaborative late last month , researchers found Stadium Village businesses along the Green Line earned higher profits and sales after the light rail began service, in contrast to their Saint Paul counterparts. Still, some in the area say their businesses suffered.

Political candidates must support environmentalism

A recent article on the Guardian newspaper’s website reports on a study by Greenpeace and the Center for Media and Democracy detailing the support Republican presidential hopefuls are receiving from donors with fossil-fuel ties. So far, eight of 17 GOP figures have received a total of $62 million. The largest recipients have been Sen. Ted Cruz 
and former Govs. Jeb Bush and Rick 
Perry.
This month, Pope Francis will address a joint session of the U.S. Congress.

We can help the Science Museum

The Science Museum of Minnesota recently lost a legal battle regarding water damage to its popular, $100 million building. As a result, the museum must secure the $26 million needed to fix said damage.
The museum plans to request $13 million from the state Legislature next year, but it remains unclear how it will obtain the other half of the required cash.

Protected bike lanes a good idea

Tall white posts separated the bike lanes on Oak Street Southeast from traffic and parked cars as incoming freshmen moved into their new 
Superblock dorm rooms last week.
Protected bike lanes like these help bicyclists feel safe, especially on the University of Minnesota campus, where bike traffic has been measured as the heaviest in Minneapolis.

Gophers injured on offensive line

After a 23-17 loss against No. 3 Texas Christian University on Thursday, the Gophers football team will look to rebound against Colorado State with an offensive line battling its way through 
injuries.
Not only was Minnesota without projected starting left tackle Josh Campion due to a concussion, but backup Ben Lauer had to be taken out due to an injury of his own.
Lauer has not returned to practice this week, head coach Jerry Kill said Tuesday.
