CocoRosie to play the Cedar Cultural Center

By: Joe Kellen

CocoRosie’s Sierra Casady doesn’t do well when she’s got time on her hands.

“It’s hard to have a couple days off. … You’d think we enjoy it, but we don’t,” she said. “I’m itching to get back on the road.”

Casady and her sister Bianca have been infected by the work bug, touring internationally and expanding on their “freak folk” style the band is known for.

Kickstart your art collection

By: Callie Sacarelos

Bad artwork is inherent in college dorm rooms. Whether it’s an Ikea print of the Eiffel Tower or that “Big Lebowski” movie poster you bought at the sale on  West Bank, it’s a freshman rite to cover your walls with all things tacky.

That’s OK, at least for the first few years. It’s a part of the college experience.

But when you’re ready to move up in the world, it’s easy to start swapping out your cheap reproductions and beer signs for art that has more personal meaning and value.

Ensemble-based Sandbox Theatre unveils “This Is a World to Live In”

By: Joe Kellen

By the time you finish reading the second paragraph of this story, partner up with someone close by. You’re going to create a scene.

It has to contain 30 seconds of silence and an iconic historical quote, and you each have to repeat a similar gesture 10 times. Are you ready? You’ve got 16 minutes.

Okay, you don’t actually have to do this. But for the cast members of Sandbox Theatre’s “This Is a World to Live In,” instructions like that are a way of life.

Allen Christian’s House of Balls

By: Emily Eveland

When Allen Christian arrived at his House of Balls at 6:45 last Wednesday night, he proceeded to methodically turn on every up and downstairs light as he murmured about his four-year stint in the military.

“Shot a gun twice. Spent most of my time overseas,” he said.

Finally, the gallery was completely illuminated.

“Welcome to my House of Balls,” Christian said, scanning the space.

College Kitchen: Naked lunch

By: Alexander Brodsky

Are you on a first-name basis with every Subway employee? This isn't “Cheers” — over-familiarity probably means you're blowing a lot of money on fast lunches.

“But College Kitchenisto! I have no time in the morning to make lunch! I'm an important college student!”

Boo hoo. If you're really that busy, try devoting some time on Sunday to making a huge batch of food that you eat for lunch throughout the week. It'll save you time and money in the long run.

Bites, beers and bands

By: Callie Sacarelos

After a long, busy week, I can’t think of a better way to spend a beautiful autumn day than by nomming on some scrumptious street food, sipping locally crafted brews and listening to live music outside.

The Fall Feast Food Truck Rally, sponsored by the Minnesota Food Truck Association, will feature more than a dozen trucks, alcoholic beverages from Harriet Brewing and four local bands.

It might be overwhelming to pick from so many different mouthwatering options packed into one spot, so take this quiz to see which food truck is most likely to make you salivate.

Local whizz-kids craft exhibits with care

By: Emily Eveland

There’s a hidden world of woodworking, welding and electronic wonders in a warehouse across the street from the Hexagon Bar in the Seward neighborhood.

At first look, it seems the array of equipment could be used for anything. But soon the eye catches strange sights — a red rollercoaster here, a giant Lite-Brite wall there and even the beginnings of a homemade Ferris wheel.

Improv doodling as a sport

By: Thom Q. Johnson

“Sketch off!” is like the “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” for pen and paper.

The improvisational concept battle, organized by Barry Kudrowitz, assistant professor in the University of Minnesota’s College of Design, pits teams of artists against each other in a series of speed-drawing product development challenges. Just like “Whose Line,” all the products being doodled are made up and the points don't matter.

The fashionista is in: costumes ripped from the headlines

By: Sarah Harper

Are you always refreshing Twitter? Are you the first to say something beautiful (or crass) when a celebrity passes away? Do you run out of free articles on the New York Times website at the start of every month?

We’re about two weeks (16 shopping/sewing/crafting days) away from the big ‘Ween, so it’s high time we all start ripping costumes from the headlines.

Smart money says the streets will be crowded with Walter Whites and Miley Cyruses this year; smarter money will get spent on more original (yet still topical!) ‘stumes.
