Oregon’s Geri Ann Glasco, Cheridan Hawkins earn Pac-12 weekly softball honors

University of Oregon’s Geri Ann Glasco and Cheridan Hawkins have earned Pac-12 softball honors for the week of Mar. 24-29.

Glasco was named Pac-12 Player of the Week for the first time, while Cheridan Hawkins earned the conference’s Pitcher of the Week title for the second-straight week and the third time this season.

University of Utah’s Miranda Viramontes was named Freshman of the Week.

Glasco posted eight hits in 10 at-bats, scoring five runs and bringing in six more with four home runs and a double in the five games. Three of her four home runs were against the Washington Huskies on Sunday, matching the Ducks’ single-game record shared by two other players. Glasco had three multi-hit games, once in the doubleheader against Utah Valley University, then twice against University of Washington. The designated player also went 1-1 on the mound with 13 strikeouts in nine innings pitched, helping the Ducks go 4-1 during the week.

Hawkins threw her first-career perfect game — the first for the Ducks since 2013 — leading to the 8-0 sweep against the No. 19 Huskies on Friday. The junior put up three strikeouts and only 56 pitches in the five-inning win for Oregon. Hawkins returned to the starting position for the third game in the weekend series to pitch 4.2 innings, striking out six, to help improve the Ducks to 30-4 (8-1 Pac-12) on the season. She now has a 0.43 ERA on the year with 122 strikeouts in 97 innings.

Hawkins’ honor is the ninth of her career, which is tied for ninth-best in Pac-12 history. Oregon now has 55 weekly honors all-time.

The Ducks will play this weekend in a three-game series at UCLA that begins Friday, April 3.

Women’s tennis defeated by defending champ UCLA, 5-2

In the second of two weekend home matches against the L.A. schools, the Oregon women’s tennis team was unable to come up with a win against the defending national champion UCLA squad, falling 5-2.

But it was not a day without victories for the Ducks.

“To play against two of the top teams in the nation and to compete and battle the way we did, proves to ourselves we’re moving in the right direction,” Oregon head coach Alison Silverio said.

Oregon duo Marlou Kluiving and Nicole Long solidly beat the No. 1 doubles duo in the country, Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips, 8-5.

UCLA would take control to earn the doubles point following wins at the No.1 and No.3 doubles positions.

In singles play, the Ducks trailed the Bruins 3-1 after Oregon’s Nia Rose fell to UCLA’s Robin Anderson 6-1, 6-1, and Rose Tobita won at No. 2 after Jennifer Brady retired for the Bruins.

Kluiving and Harrison battled out the afternoon at No.4 singles, at one point reaching a 9-9 score in the tiebreaker. UCLA ended up taking the point after Kluiving lost 6-2, 7-6 (12).

The day wrapped up after UCLA put up the final point after a 10-point tiebreaker between Oregon’s Lina Akesson and UCLA’s Kristin Wiley that ended in the Bruins favor, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0.

“Our next step is to continually believe in ourselves and what we’re doing and the process because we are right there…we are right there,” Silverio said. “We’re going to continue to work hard and come out consistently, intense and have that determination to keep building from a phenomenal weekend.”

Up next for the Ducks is a trip to play the Bay Area schools, starting with Stanford on Friday at 1:30 p.m.

Oregon women’s tennis falls to No. 1 USC, 6-1

The Oregon women’s tennis team fell 6-1 against top-ranked USC at the Oregon Outdoor Tennis Courts on Friday. But despite the home loss, it was a monumental day in the development of freshman Nia Rose.

Rose scored Oregon’s only point of the day and demonstrated that she could compete with the best after taking down the 11th-ranked player in the country, USC’s Giuliana Olmos, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles position. Rose’s win over Olmos handed the junior her first loss in Pac-12 play.

“Nia performed well today and it’s a testament to her consistent hard work and determination,” Oregon head coach Alison Silverio said. “She can be proud of the way she handled herself mentally and believe in her abilities.”

Rose helped Oregon (8-6, 2-2 Pac-12) win the first set in three of the singles matches, but it was the Ducks’ only point of the day.

USC (15-2, 4-0 Pac-12) took an early lead during doubles play after Olmos and Meredith Xepoleas defeated Oregon’s Lina Akesson and Sofia Hager, 8-2 in the No. 3 spot. Shortly after, the 19th-ranked USC duo of Zoe Katz and Sabrina Santamaria defeated Oregon’s No. 1 team of Rose and Alyssa Tobita in similar fashion, 8-2, to clinch the doubles point.

The Trojans took an early 2-0 lead in singles action when Gabriella DiSimone beat Paloma Gomez 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

Battling 2013 NCAA doubles champion Santamaria, Tobita fell 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 position.

USC clinched the match when Meredith Xepoleas, the 64th-ranked singles player, defeated Akesson 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5.

Oregon’s Marlou Kluiving was forced into a third set by USC’s Smith after winning the first set 6-3. Smith took the match 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 and handed Kluiving her first loss in singles play since Jan. 17, ending her 14-match winning streak.

The Ducks will host No. 4 UCLA this Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

Oregon basketball gets invite to Big Dance, men’s track and field earns second consecutive NCAA Indoor Championship

– Oregon men’s basketball made a statement with a thrilling 67-64 win over Utah (finished with an incredible buzzer beater by Pac-12 Player of the Year Joe Young) in the Pac-12 Tournament semi-final. Though the Ducks fell 80-52 in the final to the Wildcats, Oregon earned a No. 8 seed in the 2015 NCAA tournament. The Ducks will face No. 9 seed Oklahoma State on Thursday, March 19 in Omaha, Nebraska. Read up on four factors to look out for in the first round match up here.

Oregon men’s track and field brought home their second consecutive NCAA Indoor Championship. Oregon’s Eric Jenkins, who took the title in the 5K on Saturday, won the 3K race in 7:58.81 on Sunday. Sophomore Edward Cheserek finished first in the mile with a time of 3:57.94, bumping his total NCAA title count to six. The Ducks finished the weekend with 74 points; Florida finished in second with 50, and Arkansas rounded out the top three with 39 points. The Oregon women finished second, breaking a school record in points scored at the NCAA Indoor meet with 46.5. Arkansas took home the women’s title with 63 points.

– Four-star wide receiver Theo Howard verbally committed to play football at Oregon over the weekend. The 5-foot-11 170-pound wideout is the fifth commit to Oregon’s 2016 class.

– Despite multiple rain delays through out the weekend, Oregon softball swept a three-game home series against Oregon State.

In the last home opener to be held at Howe Field before its remodel, Cheridan Hawkins pitched a no hitter to lead the Ducks to a 10-0 win in their first Pac-12 game of the season.

The first game in Sunday’s double-header resulted in a 23-12 Oregon win, highlighted by freshman Gwen Svekis’ nine RBIs, the most in single-game school history. In the second game of the day, both Hailey Decker and Janie Takeda knocked out three-run home runs to propel the Ducks to a 9-0 run-ruled victory  over the Beavers.

– Oregon men’s tennis wrapped up a weekend in Idaho with a 4-2 win over Boise State on Sunday. The Ducks also chalked up a 4-0 win over Utah State on Saturday. The men’s tennis program is now 10-4 on the season, and will host Pacific on Monday, March 23 before they start Pac-12 play on the road at the Los Angeles schools March 27-28.

– After starting the weekend with losses on Friday and Saturday against the Cal on the road in Berkeley, No. 8 Oregon baseball managed to finished the weekend with a 4-2 win on Sunday.

Oregon softball ends Civil War series against Oregon State with 9-0 win

Within moments of the start of the second game in Sunday’s double-header between Oregon and Oregon State at Howe Field, a rain delay forced both teams to clear the field. There were two outs in the bottom of the first and Oregon had runners on second and third.

Minutes after the brief delay, Hailey Decker hit a three-run homer that put the Ducks up 3-0 and set the path for the team’s scoring in the final game of the weekend series against the Beavers.

Oregon dominated the afternoon game with a 9-0 run-ruled win over Oregon State.

“We play in the rain all the time…all the time,” Oregon’s Cheridan Hawkins said. “Practice in the rain, play in the rain…I don’t think it was really a factor.”

The Ducks now move to 23-3 overall and 3-0 in Pac-12 play; the Beavers are 19-9, 0-3.

Oregon’s Janie Takeda chalked up her third home run of the year with the second three-run homer of the game. This time, it was a third-inning shot to center, bringing the score to 8-0.

The Ducks had three hits in the fourth and added on one more run, producing the game’s eventual final score of 9-0.

“We hit the ball well right from one through nine,” Oregon head coach Mike White said. “We had a lot of people who contributed and did a great job. In just the last game we had four hits from the bottom three hitters…anytime you do that, you’re going to be tough.”

Hawkins pitched a two-hitter into the fifth. She pitched all three wins in the Oregon State weekend series and is now 11-2. The junior has allowed only four earned runs in 73.1 innings this season.

Aside from allowing the Beavers to score zero runs, the Ducks also committed zero errors. “It is one of the few zeroes I appreciate,” White laughed.

Despite sweeping Oregon State in all three games in the series, Oregon coaches feel the team has yet to perform at the level that would allow them to win against some of the best teams in the country.

“Overall, we’ve got to play a lot better than that if we want to beat the top teams in the conference and the nation,” White said.

Next up for the Ducks is a trip to Salt Lake City for a three-game series against Utah on Mar. 21 – 23.

Oregon grinds out 4-3 win over Washington State

The Oregon women’s tennis team fought their way to a win on Sunday against Washington State, 4-3.

The team’s victory at the Student Tennis Center outdoor courts marked first-year head coach Alison Silverio’s first Pac-12 win.

“For myself and Tony it was our first Pac-12 conference match, and for our freshmen their first ever conference match,” said Silverio. “ It was fun leading up to this weekend, talking to the upperclassmen and the girls who have obviously been in these situations. To have them share their experiences and for us to be prepared mentally was huge.”

Washington State was the first on the board with an 8-0 win by Nastia Vasyukhina and Donika Bsahota over Oregon’s Lina Akesson and Paloma Gomez. The Ducks tied it up at 1-1 when No. 1 doubles team Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita topped Elizaveta Luzina and Lize Leenknecht, 8-4.

Oregon clinched the doubles point and a 1-0 lead on the day after Nicole Long and Marlous Kluiving got an 8-4 win over WSU’s Maria Biryukova and Victoria Matejevic.

After losses by Akesson and Gomez and wins by Long and Kluiving, the Ducks were up 3-2. Rose dropped her first set 4-6, but battled back against Elizaveta Luzina of Washington State to win the last two sets 6-3, 6-4, and secure Sunday’s win for Oregon.

“It’s definitely nice to clinch. I’ve been working hard this week trying to put in a lot of work,” said Rose on her singles win. “I knew she (Luzina) was going to be a tough player, so I’m glad all the hard work translated today.”

Tobita grinded through a match that lasted for over three hours against Washington State’s Maria Biryukova, but eventually lost 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-5.

Sunday’s win marks the first time that Oregon has beat Washington State since 2010. The Ducks are now 6-3 on the season, and only one win away from tying their overall win total from last year (7-15).

The match also marked the return of former Oregon’s men’s tennis standout Robin Cambier. This time, he returned to the courts as an assistant coach for the Cougars.

“It is inspiring to be back in Eugene but on the other side now as a coach,” said Cambier. “I was disappointed that my team couldn’t come up with the win, but it felt good to be back in this place where I built so many great memories.”

Oregon will travel to Utah to play Utah State in Ogden, Utah on Saturday, March 14 at 11 a.m., and then face BYU the next day on Sunday, March 15 in Provo, Utah at 11 a.m.

Ayele Forde creates original show for Duck TV

Open a web browser tab and do an online search of the name Ayele Forde. The majority of the top results share similar headlines:

Ayele Forde ineligible for title game after positive drug test

Oregon RB Forde also benched after positive drug test

Duck Ayele Forde also left home for positive drug test, Mark Helfrich says

“It sucks having your name out there in a negative light, for any reason,” said Forde. “Things happen, you make your own decisions. I made mine and I had to live with those consequences.”

Scroll past the first page of results and click over to the second, and the first opportunity to see past Forde’s abilities on the football field is revealed on his Instagram account.

Aside from the occasional football related post, the feed is full of original paintings, detailed sketches and videos produced by the senior from Victorville, Calif.

A testament of his creative talent is shown in a post Forde shared in 2013, of an award given to him by University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. The award acclaimed Forde as “Most Likely to Take the Art World By Storm.”

Forde has always been an artist. A digital arts major, his two main inspirations are animators Hayao Miyazaki and Erik Jones. He taught himself how to play the piano and guitar, draw, sculpt and paint.

“In high school, I would always paint and do random commissions for people,” said Forde. “I never went out; I just stayed in the house and drew and watched anime on Saturday nights. That’s all I would do in high school: football, draw and watch cartoons.

His artistic talents were recognized by fellow athletes at Oregon.

“In the nicest way possible, Ayele is an interesting guy,” laughed former Oregon linebacker Carlyle Garrick. “His mind is always thinking bigger and grander. He isn’t super open about being an artist, but it is something everyone on the (football) team just knows.”

In the months following his departure from the game of football, Forde has been able to pursue his artistic passions outside of athletics.

His current focus: a television show for Duck TV, the University of Oregon’s student-run television program.

“It has been really, really cool having Ayele on Duck TV this term,” said Duck TV executive producer Cody Byrne. “We were excited when he and Carlyle came out to show pitches with a concept for a series that is unlike anything we have ever had before.”

Titled “The Box,” the bi-weekly creative show explores the potential of the imagination and coincidence. The show is composed of small videos that Forde had written in the past, now constructed around a singular plot line and connected by one central character.

“The concept came from people always telling me ‘you gotta think outside the box,’” said Forde on the conception of the show. “Well I was like, what’s the thinking inside the box, nobody has ever thought about that.”

Forde recruited Garrick to be the lead producer after the they swapped ideas while in Pasadena for the 2015 Rose Bowl. The two realized that they each bring key production strengths to the table.

“He brought me on to be sort of his mind, as far as his mind that is on earth,” said Garrick. “I’m like his interpreter when people are trying to figure out what he is trying to say about his thoughts.”

Two episodes of “The Box” have aired on public access channel 23 and are also available online at the Duck TV website. Forde says the feedback towards the show has been positive.

“From what people have told me is that they’re interested, confused, curious,” said Forde. “And someone told me today that they think that I’m raising the level of Duck TV and what type of things can be done.”

With his projected graduation date this spring, Forde is content that he has had an opportunity to see through the production of one of his creations.

And most importantly, he has had the opportunity to share a part of his true character and what he brings to the table off the field.

“I’m an athlete second, or fourth, to everything. I’m definitely my own person first,” said Forde. “Just thinking of people just as athletes, as one thing, takes away from the other parts of who they are. Athletes definitely have negative stereotypes… Off the field you are what your interests are.”
