Big Gigantic, Youngblood Hawke rock rainy Spring Jam

Drexel University’s Campus Activities Board hosted their annual Spring Jam concert May 16, and it was certainly one to remember. The event was held in Lot F with excited CAB members sprinkled throughout the crowd handing attendees free towels and giant foam fingers.

The night kicked off with indie-pop band, Youngblood Hawke. The six members were full of energy, banging on large drums and hyping up the small crowd, which was approximately 20 people at the time. They sang their new single “Pressure” as well as the hit that most know them for, “We Come Running.”

After their set, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Youngblood Hawke in their makeshift dressing room in a classroom. They knew their way around the engineering complex better than most students. I was immediately offered Red Bull, peanut butter and Nutella, before we sat around in a circle of desks.

Despite the heat and tiny crowd for the first half of their set, Youngblood Hawke loved their time at Drexel. “Everybody was ready to go! There was a lot of energy,” Nik Hughes, Youngblood Hawke’s drummer, said.

It’s clear that all of the members are close friends just after meeting them for a few minutes. “We’ve all known each other for about five to ten years,” Sam Martin, lead singer of the band, said. “Simon and myself were in a band before this one and that kind of fell through. We wanted to play music with out closest friends.”

“I basically told them I was in!” Alice Katz, who is a vocalist and percussionist, chimed in.

The group describes their style as up-tempo and “bombastic” as Martin put it. Their biggest hit to date is “We Come Running,” which has an exciting music video with an inspirational meaning behind it.

“It’s a call to action, kind of an anthem,” Simon Katz said, “We decided to go swimming with tiger sharks! We wanted to tie in something to the video that was important, so we incorporated shark conservation to bring a bit of awareness to the cause. They’re not at all these dangerous creatures. Environmental causes are important to us all around.”

Youngblood Hawke is a Los Angeles based band, but they’ve performed in Philly three times before. “It was a tiny little punk rock show,” Alice said. “We didn’t know if anybody was going to show up but the club was packed,” Hughes added.

They’ve played over 600 shows around the world to date, including shows in the Philippines and Australia, where they opened up for P!nk. But what is life on the road like with a six person band?

“When you’re on tour, the things you think about are coffee, food, have I showered?” Tasso Smith, the guitarist for Youngblood Hawke, said. Alice also spoke about the situation of being the only girl. “I’m pretty easy going but sometimes I annoy them. I’ll say, ‘Okay clean the bus!’ but other than that it’s a blast. I love these guys. We all know each other really well so it’s easy.”

The conversation with this laid-back band ended with how their dream dressing room request is puppies and kittens. When I brought up Drexel’s therapy dog Jersey, every grown, bearded man in the room melted and let out an “Aww” in unison. “He looks so wise!” Simon said after being shown a picture of Jersey.

As Youngblood Hawke attended a meet and greet followed by a much-deserved meal at Shake Shack, Cherub took the stage. Jordan Kelley and Jason Huber are a pop funk band who clearly had the now larger crowd excited. An intense break dancing circle broke out despite the steady rain that was coming down. Cherub sang all of their hits including a crowd favorite, “Doses and Mimosas.”

Before the final and main act, jazz and electronic band Big Gigantic, could take the stage, Spring Jam’s host and student disc jockey winner George Armentani announced that the audience had to go inside until the heavy rain passed. After only a 20-minute delay, the show was back on. Big Gigantic had the crowd in the palms of their hands, even bringing Cherub back out to sing their collaboration, “The Night Is Young.”

Drexel students trekked back to their rooms drenched but smiling after three hours of amazing live music.

Baha Men’s Knight details band’s return after ten years

Since 2000, we’ve been asking the same question. “Who let the dogs out? Who? Who?” It’s been 15 years since the Baha Men released their smash hit that was played non-stop. But where is the group now? Well, they’re about to release a brand new album this month titled “Ride With Me.” I had the pleasure of chatting with Dyson Knight, the band’s lead singer, about the album and what they’ve been up to for the past 10 years.

It may seem as though new music from the Baha Men came out of the blue, and the story of how it happened is a whirlwind.

“We were at a Sony conference in the Bahamas. They asked for the top band, and since we are the only ones with a Grammy, we were asked to perform for them,” Knight said. “The CEO of Sony asked a friend if we would sign and they basically stopped the show. It got everyone excited, feeling that energy.”

Knight attributes the final decision of getting back into music to the group missing the excitement of the stage and finally finding that feeling again at the conference.

“We’ve really been doing nothing all this time,” he said. “We’ve been keeping busy, just enjoying life in the Bahamas. There’s never been a sense of urgency to get back in.”

Now that the Baha Men are reentering the music scene, there is one question that everyone is wondering: Will they forevermore be associated with “Who Let the Dogs Out?”

“We actually thought about changing our name to this! It’s a mega song and is still being talked about,” Knight said. “It’s one of those songs that’s just going to be around forever. It’s not going to move anywhere.”

It’s safe to say that the band has evolved their sound since their first hit. At first, they were only supposed to record an EP. However, a producer had so much faith in their new sound that he wanted to make more music, resulting in a full album.

“It’s definitely current,” Knight said of the new music. “It will be a relevant competitor in dance pop music. We’ve worked with people like Santana and Wyclef Jean, so it’s not going to sound old at all.”

The first single off the album is called “Night & Day” and has a music video to go along with it. Knight’s personal favorite song from the album is “Carry On.”

“My daughter actually picked it,” he said. “She is very much a critic.”

Knight is confident about the future and the new sound of the Baha Men, however, he is understandably apprehensive about jumping back in after 10 years.

“It’s exciting and scary being off the scene for so long,” he said. “You don’t know who’s still listening. Technology is different. We’re trying to revamp our social media profiles and it gets tiring.”

Look out for the Baha Men’s new album “Ride With Me” this month and check out bahamen.com for videos, updates and links to the band’s social media profiles.

Stars of ‘Horrible Bosses 2′ discuss filmmaking process

For anyone who has ever wanted to murder their boss, get excited. “Horrible Bosses” is returning with a sequel, filled with even crazier antics than before. As Dale, Nick and Kurt set out to start their own business, problems ensue, which of course, lead to more kidnappings. The stars of the film — Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day — discussed “Horrible Bosses 2” during an entertaining conference call.

The three were thrilled to work together again for the sequel. “As actors, it was really fun for the three of us to get back together again because we enjoy each other’s company and we had this great time in the first one,” Day said. “As characters, it’s a terrible thing for the three of these people to get back together again because they keep getting themselves into some serious trouble here.”

While the comedy and humor of the first installment is still evident in this movie, there are some changes and unexpected guests that audiences can look forward to.

“The first movie we spent the first 30 minutes each in our own little movie with our own horrible boss,” Sudeikis said. “And this one it’s just right off the bat, we’re all three sitting next to each other on a couch.”

“Chris Pine … he brought a lot to it, just in terms of what we did differently,” Day said. “Brought a lot of hotness,” Bateman added.

In addition to Chris Pine, the movie features other well-known actors including Christoph Waltz, Kevin Spacey, Jonathan Banks and Keegan-Michael Key.

“This is a big, kind of silly commercial studio comedy. When you can class it up with some Oscar winners it becomes a really nice, balanced cocktail, I think,” Bateman said.

“It’s really flattering to make the first one and have it exist, and then when you’re making the second one, to have people say, ‘Oh yes, I want to be a part of that,’” Sudeikis added.

Fans of “Horrible Bosses” are able to see the guys in action on screen, being their usual comedic selves. But does this humor continue behind the scenes? It does, to an extent.

“There was a lot of goofing around and making each other laugh, on-camera, off-camera. … We were actually trying to simmer things down and be serious to get some work done sometimes,” Bateman said.

“Not a lot of whoopee cushions on that set,” Day added. “We want to make sure everyone gets home to their kids, but you know we had fun making it.”

Another change to expect is the director. Sean Anders and his writing partner, John Morris, are new to the “Horrible Bosses” family, but fit right in. They are two of the most popular comedic writers in Hollywood at the moment, writing other comedies including “We’re the Millers.”

“He walks a really good line of not completely reinventing it. … He put a little more style into the second one and it fits the story. So I think he did a really good job that way,” Day said about the work of Sean Anders.

Whenever a sequel of a popular movie comes out, there is always the question of whether it will be as great. Bateman, Sudeikis and Day are all very confident that audiences will love “Horrible Bosses 2” just as much as the first movie.

“I’m pretty fair about being objective, and I really enjoyed the first just as a viewer,” Bateman said. “I watched this one with that same perspective and I genuinely like it even more than the first. If people see it the way I see it, they’re going to be very happy with this one.”

“Horrible Bosses 2” is in theaters everywhere on Nov. 26, 2014.

Rapper Jake Miller reveals inspirations behind songs

Jake Miller_Edgar Estevez_WEB

Photo Courtesy Edgar Estevez. Jake Miller, the 20-year-old rap, pop and hip-hop artist, is touring to promote his new album, “Us Against Them,” with meaningful songs like “I’m Alright.”

Watch out, Justin Bieber — there’s a new guy in town, and his name is Jake Miller. Miller is a 20-year-old rap, pop and hip-hop artist from Florida, and he is in the process of taking the world by storm with his first headlining tour and a brand new album, “Us Against Them.” He is currently touring the country, meeting fans and signing albums, but on Nov. 7, in the midst of a crowded mall meet-and-greet, yours truly got to chat with this up-and-coming star about all the craziness.

We first talked about the current tour and the new album, both of which are getting his name spread around the country like wildfire. “Us Against Them” is different than his first two EPs. He said, “It is absolutely more fun. It’s more of a ‘windows-down’ kind of sound.” MTV said several months back that Miller was about to blow up, and he definitely is, with his years of hard work finally paying off.

Miller’s music is technically considered rap, but he is unlike many other rappers today. He said, “Every day is a new adventure. I love helping people and changing their lives with my music. Fans have come up to me crying at meet-and-greets, telling me stories about how my music has helped them get through some rough times. I like to have meaning in my songs — not the usual drugs, money and girls like most rappers out there today. My music is a new genre.” One example of this is his song “I’m Alright,” which talks about a homeless man who still manages to see the good things in life.

Besides being an inspirational artist, Miller is incredibly close to all his fans, collectively referred to as the “Millertary.” Obviously he can’t meet everybody, but he tries his hardest. While most artists are heading to the next city before anyone is out of the arena, Jake tweets fans telling them to wait outside by his tour bus after the show. He is also doing something that no other artist has ever done before: “I am hiding golden tickets in five of the new albums. Whoever finds one gets to come to any show for free, forever.”

Miller’s music also has a lot to do with his fans. The best example of this is “A Million Lives.” It is about encounters and letters from fans telling him their struggles — including battling cancer, bullying and a brother’s death — and how his music helped them feel strong. Miller explained, “The song is all based off of real stories. The girl in the music video is actually a friend of mine who has battled cancer.”

Jake is a very nice-looking guy, and with that always comes lots of screaming fans. In his words, “It’s definitely strange. I’m so used to being in the audience, so it’s weird to be on the other side of it.” However, he makes the most of it. For his one song, “My Couch,” he got an actual couch for the show. “I bring a girl up onstage, sit her on the couch and sing to her. I even give her a bowl of popcorn.” It appears the fans also want to give something back to him in return for his amazing lyrics: “I don’t even know how many hats I have. Fans bring them to me at every show. Sometimes the fans bring me five hats a night!”

While the fans’ love is an upside to the job, there are definitely some downsides. Miller explained, “There is another side to the industry. It’s not all rainbows and sunshine. It’s hard being away from everyone at home. It also gets ugly when you have a music label, and sometimes they just don’t understand what you are going through.” However, through it all, he manages to stay grounded and keep his drive strong. The last song on the album is “Number One Rule,” which is about how one should never settle for being second best. He said, “If you have a specific goal in mind, you won’t let anyone get in your way.” He definitely hasn’t let this happen.

Miller is an incredibly genuine guy who puts his fans before anyone else, wants to change people’s lives with his music and is a role model for anyone who has a dream. His album “Us Against Them” is out now, and you can see him perform in Philadelphia Thursday, Nov. 14, at Theatre of the Living Arts. Follow him on Twitter @jakemillermusic, check out his website at jakemiller.com, and follow him on Facebook to be a part of the “Millertary.”

1D releases extended cut

Grab your popcorn, everyone — the biggest boy band on the planet now has its own movie! The past three years for One Direction have been an absolute whirlwind. Both of their albums have gone straight to the top of the charts, and their third is currently No. 1 on iTunes despite the fact that it hasn’t even been released yet. When people achieve fame this quickly, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that they are still human, but the members of One Direction didn’t want this to happen. They had camera crews follow them around during every waking moment for several months on the British leg of their Take Me Home tour. Fans can now get an up-close and personal look at the pop stars’ lives and get an idea of who their idols actually are.

“This Is Us” is currently in theaters everywhere, and an extended edition was released Sept. 13. This version gives fans even more to enjoy with 20 extra minutes of footage as well as four more songs from the concert. It is a must-see for everyone, whether you are a Directioner or not.

The heart of the film is all the personal, behind-the-scenes footage that fans can never get from Twitter or Google. Despite the fame, you get to see that Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne are still the five crazy teenage boys who originally auditioned for “The X Factor” three years ago. In more than one scene, they can be seen smacking each other in the face, shimmying around the stage during tour rehearsals and running away from their security guards. One even had to physically carry Styles over his shoulders to the dressing room so that he wouldn’t escape. Before shows, the boys have food fights in the hallways and trash their band’s dressing room. Horan is the craziest of them all, shaking his behind, laughing hysterically and farting in almost all of his scenes.

One of the main things to take out of “This Is Us” is that One Direction is still a group of five incredibly humble men. Fame has not gone to their heads in the slightest. Before their biggest gig to date at Madison Square Garden, you get to see all of their parents. Styles’ mom, Anne, talks about how she is so proud of her son that her heart could burst. Horan’s dad says that the roles of father and son are reversed and that it is Niall who is teaching him all about the world and life. Meanwhile, Payne’s mom bought a cardboard cutout of her son because it is the closest thing to actually having him home. The most touching of all is when Malik buys his mom, Trisha, a beautiful new home. He set out to be a star in order to give back to her, and now that dream has become a reality.

Throughout the film, scenes from the Take Me Home tour are also shown. With the 3-D effect, it looks as if your favorite guy is singing directly to you from the stage. They are shown performing their hit songs, including “What Makes You Beautiful” and “Kiss You.” The boys are natural performers, and whether or not you were able to see the tour in person, the movie footage is pretty darn close to the actual thing.

Fans are also a highlight of the film because the boys wouldn’t have gotten anywhere without them. The best scene is when Horan explains how they have the best fans in the world. To prove it, he runs over to the window, sticks his head out to the roar of thousands of fans down below, and after waving, he closes the window and exclaims, “Proof!” In another scene, Tomlinson dresses up as an old, fat man on the street giving out free hugs. Needless to say, most of the people avoid him. However, when one little girl is brave enough to give this stranger a hug, he takes off his costume and absolutely makes her day.

The One Direction craze is taking on the life of Beatlemania, and this film will serve as a piece of history as the boys’ success just keeps growing. The film proves that no matter how famous they get, they will be the same five lads who are still amazed by it all and still remain complete sweethearts to their fans, friends and family.

Philly fans welcome Swift

Philadelphia was overrun with red on July 20. Red cowboy boots, red shirts, red everything. This could only mean one thing: Taylor Swift’s RED Tour hit Lincoln Financial Field for the second consecutive night, and fans were going all out to make sure everyone knew where they were heading.

Fans packed Lincoln Financial Field for Taylor Swift’s RED Tour July 19 and 20. The country pop singer-songwriter performed a mix of popular hits, including “You Belong WIth Me” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”

Fans packed Lincoln Financial Field for Taylor Swift’s RED Tour July 19 and 20. The country pop singer-songwriter performed a mix of popular hits, including “You Belong WIth Me” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”

The “Swifties,” as her fans are called, ranged from 5-year-old girls to 50-year-old men. Every blond tween girl wore red lipstick to mimic her idol, while their dads painted their entire faces red for the event. Moms could be seen dancing in the aisles before the show even began, and guys in their 20s were prowling around the stadium hoping to get a glimpse of their dream girl.

Swift had two talented opening acts, both of which are nominated for a Video Music Award. The first was 17-year-old Austin Mahone. Sporting a blue jersey that said “Philly” on the front, he sang a few of his singles, including “What About Love.” He also did some acoustic covers on a red guitar, including “Beautiful Soul” by Jesse McCartney.

The second act was British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. Coming out in sneakers, white socks and a blue polo, flaming red hair all disheveled, Sheeran commanded the stage. With no backup band, his act included just his guitar and his voice. His main goal was to make the spectators lose their voices, and he succeeded by playing hit singles “Lego House” and “A-Team.”

After Sheeran finished, it was time for Swift to take the stage. Just as her massive stage was being set up, however, an announcement was made for everyone to take cover because there would soon be severe lightning and wind. Within minutes, the entire audience was packed like sardines into the back of the stadium. Thankfully, even a 45-minute rain delay didn’t get the Swifties’ spirits down. Moms were buying their excited daughters plenty of merchandise, and groups of girls could be heard throughout the area singing her songs to pass the time.

Finally, at about 10:30 p.m., the rain cleared and it was showtime. All the lights in the place shut off suddenly, making all the glowing signs in the audience shine brighter. It was a brilliant sight to see. Then, a skinny shadow with long hair appeared behind a giant red curtain. Swift emerged in tiny black shorts and a black hat, which seems to be her new, more conservative look. The crowd went nuts as she sang her opening number, “State of Grace.”

Not one song was a disappointment. For just about every number she had a different costume and an entirely different and elaborate set design. She played all of her hits. During her latest, “22,” she had backup dancers carry her through the audience to a back stage where she sang “You Belong With Me” on a stool with just her guitar. Sheeran even reappeared for their duet, “Everything Has Changed,” in which they rose up on a floating platform.

Taylor got very personal with the audience, talking to them and expressing the inspiration behind each song. She also expressed her love for Philly, which she considers her hometown because she grew up not far from here. She even apologized for the weather, telling the audience how while she was backstage she said, “Stop it, rain! I have to play in my hometown!”

The big finale was the breakup anthem “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” and what a finale it was. Taylor wore an elaborate circus ringmaster costume and floated over the audience on a long platform. Right before the end, fireworks erupted from the stage behind her. Finally, she and her amazing backup dancers took their bows. The crowd never stopped screaming for her.

It was a night that Swifties, both young and old, will never forget.

Philly welcomes One Direction

Philadelphia was taken over on June 25 by high-pitched screams and girls running down the street at top speed. Were they in danger? Of course not! They were just showing their excitement for the boys of One Direction, who stopped at the Wells Fargo Center on their Take Me Home World Tour. In case you didn’t already know, the band consists of Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson. The five boys were surely ready to put on an amazing concert, but the fans were even more ready. Tickets for the concert went on sale in June 2012, so thousands of fans have been anxiously awaiting this event for an entire year. Several could be seen hiding from the blistering heat as early as 9 a.m. just to ensure they had the perfect viewing spot for when the boys arrived. Several had homemade signs, saying things like “They lost ‘The X Factor’ but won the world.” Fans who had never met each other before were becoming fast friends and bonding over their shared love for the pop band.

At around 3:30 p.m., the band’s massive gray tour bus pulled up to the arena. The boys got out one by one, waving to the crowd as they made their way inside. Although fans only caught a quick glimpse of the boys, joy was evident on each of their faces. After a private meet-and-greet, the boys were seen playing soccer outside — shirtless, of course — causing the fans to become even crazier.
The concert later kicked off with the opening act, the Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer. Just a little-known group a few months back, Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin now have their own packs of girls screaming at them, thanks to opening for One Direction. They sang a few of their well-known songs, like “Heartbreak Girl.”
Finally, around 8:45 p.m., five little openings in the stage could be seen. One Direction popped out of them to a roaring arena. The crowd was absolutely buzzing with excitement, and it was clear that the boys were, too. They sang some of their popular songs from their first album, “Up All Night,” including the single “One Thing”; however, the majority came from their newest album, “Take Me Home.”
The five boys were literally all over the arena. They took turns running back and forth across the stage so that everyone got a chance to get a good look at their favorite member. Halfway through the show, they performed the beautiful ballad “Change My Mind,” during which they floated up and over the audience on a long platform. They ended up on a little stage in the back of the audience and performed “One Way or Another” before floating back to the main stage.
One very touching part of the show was when they sang “Little Things.” They asked everyone in the audience to hold up their phones so that the entire arena was filled with twinkling lights. The whole scene was so beautiful that the boys could be seen tearing up on the giant screens.
Luckily, One Direction did not forget what city they were in. Harry called the entire audience “Philly cheesesteaks,” and they weren’t afraid to call out people in the crowd. During the part when they floated over the audience, Harry said how one girl was waving at them while texting. “She wasn’t even paying attention!” he said. Later on in the show, Niall caught two girls leaving early, so he asked them “Are we boring you?” and made them sit on the “naughty steps.”
The boys concluded with their original hit, “What Makes You Beautiful,” making it an amazing night to remember. It was sad to think that it’s over, but the boys aren’t done just yet. One Direction has already announced dates for their 2014 Where We Are tour so the fans can do this all over again.

The 55th Annual Grammy Awards provide excitement and surprises

Where can you find a necklace worth $31 million? Only at the Grammy Awards! This year’s show was not one to forget easily, and it had countless moments that everyone was gossiping about the next day. The night kicked off on the red carpet, where celebrities discussed which designers they were wearing and had their elaborate dresses showcased on the 360-degree camera. Carrie Underwood happened to be the lucky lady who got the privilege of wearing the multimillion-dollar necklace.

Justin Timberlake performed “Suit & Tie” with Jay-Z at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. He also debuted “Pusher Love Girl,” which will be featured on his upcoming album.

Photo Courtesy: The Recording Academy –  Justin Timberlake performed “Suit & Tie” with Jay-Z at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. He also debuted “Pusher Love Girl,” which will be featured on his upcoming album.

The first act of the night was Taylor Swift singing her smash hit “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” The performance included a man strapped to a spinning wheel and her attempt at a British accent, which we all know was a little shot at her most recent ex-boyfriend, Harry Styles of One Direction.

Later in the evening, Justin Timberlake made his return to the music scene after seven years away and performed his new song “Suit & Tie” with Jay-Z and an entire band behind him dancing and jamming along. Another notable performer was Carrie Underwood, who performed “Blown Away” and wore a dress that looked straight out of the future, with lights, flowers and leaves appearing and moving along it throughout the song.

There were also several amazing duets throughout the night. British singer and beautiful lyricist Ed Sheeran sang “A Team” with his idol, Elton John. It was just Sheeran on his guitar and John on his piano, but it was truly a magical moment onstage. Maroon 5 and Alicia Keys had some of the best vocals of the night, combining their songs “Daylight” and “Girl on Fire” into one perfect collaboration.

Near the end of the show, a tribute was made to Bob Marley by Bruno Mars, Sting, Rihanna, and Marley’s two sons who look identical to him, dreadlocks and all. This seemed to be a crowd favorite. Swift, among many other artists, could be seen in the audience singing and clapping along.

Many awards were handed out, and while some were expected, others were real shockers. Gotye won Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance with Kimbra for “Somebody That I Used to Know,” which we should all know by heart after hearing it endless times over the last year. Mumford & Sons took away the coveted Album of the Year for “Babel,” while fun. scored Song of the Year for “We Are Young,” as well as Best New Artist. Even after having a baby, Adele is still going strong, winning Best Pop Solo Performance for “Set Fire to the Rain.” This was one of the bigger surprises of the night because even Adele didn’t expect to receive this award. Kelly Clarkson won Best Pop Vocal Album for “Stronger,” which was well deserved with her talented voice. Keeping up the good reputation of “American Idol” winners, Underwood won Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song for “Blown Away.” The Black Keys took over the rock world with Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song for “Lonely Boy” and Best Rock Album for “El Camino,” while newcomer Frank Ocean won Best Urban Contemporary Album for “Channel Orange.”

The night ended with some very deserving artists going home empty-handed. However, that is the beauty of the Grammy Awards; there’s always next year.
