Neighborhood organizations to decide how they’ll spend Vikings’ money

The Minnesota Vikings are looking for high-visibility projects to fund in the neighborhoods adjacent to the University of Minnesota ahead of their arrival at TCF Bank Stadium next year.

At a meeting Wednesday night hosted by the Southeast Como Improvement Association, representatives from the team said the neighborhoods can apply for part of a cash grant that the football team will make available through the Vikings Good Neighbor Partnership Fund.

Gophers beat Nebraska 34-23

Gophers sophomore quarterback Philip Nelson rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another as the Gophers defeated No. 21 Nebraska 34-23 on Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium.

Minnesota (6-2, 2-2 Big Ten) became bowl eligible with the win — its first over Nebraska since 1960.

Junior running back David Cobb rushed for 138 yards on 31 carries, and Minnesota withstood a second-half charge by Nebraska (5-2, 2-1 Big Ten).

Fire damages Dinkytown apartments

An apartment above Espresso Royale caught fire in Dinkytown Friday afternoon. No injuries have been reported, according to the Minneapolis Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is unknown and is being investigated, according to Minneapolis Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve Dziedzic.

Poster kiosk catches fire outside Vincent Hall Monday night

One of the pillars covered with posters caught fire on the University of Minnesota east bank campus Monday night. 

A University police officer responded to the incident outside of Vincent Hall around 7:40 p.m. and tried to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher, but was unsuccessful, according to the police report.

The Minneapolis Fire Department then arrived on the scene and put out the fire.

Animal science freshman Krista Alvord was leaving a chemistry review session in Smith Hall just before 8 p.m. when she said she smelled the smoke.

U employees rally for sliding-scale health care model

University of Minnesota clerical, technical and health care workers unions rallied against proposed changes to the employee health care plan at Northrop Mall on Thursday.

A few hundred people gathered in front of the University administration’s main building, wielding signs with the slogan, “Stop cost shifting to employees,” while speakers stood on the steps of Morrill Hall and spoke out against the health plan changes.

Fairview announces new CEO and President

Fairview Health Services announced its new president and CEO Tuesday.

Rulon Stacey, who is currently the president of University of Colorado Health, will begin Nov. 4.

The Fairview health system serves more than 625,000 people a year and includes the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview.

Charles Mooty, who has been serving as Fairview’s interim CEO since July of last year, said the board of directors is “thrilled” by the appointment.

“Every health system Rulon has touched throughout his career has dramatically improved clinical quality and patient experience,” he said in a press release. “Under his leadership, I am confident Fairview patients and families will see care and service continue to get better and better.”

Stacey, a graduate of Brigham Young University and the University of Colorado, served as CEO of Poudre Valley Health System for 16 years before it merged with the University of Colorado Hospital last year to become UCH.

In the press release, Stacey specifically cited looking forward to working with the University.

“Fairview and its partner, the University of Minnesota, are already well respected organizations nationally,” he said, “and I look forward to joining them in their quest to continually improve and grow.”
