Nominations for USG representatives open Feb. 28

Election season for Michigan Tech’s Undergraduate Student Government (USG) is well underway. Nominations for E-Board and At-Large positions have passed, and elections are currently open and set to close on Feb. 28. Nominations for general representative positions will be open from Feb. 28 through March 14, with elections to follow from March 21 through March 28.

According to their website, USG acts as a voice for the student body, serving “as an effective, efficient, responsible, and responsive body to the Student Assembly.” They are also in charge of dispersing Student Activity Fee funding to Michigan Tech’s many student organizations.

Davi Sprague, USG’s Fourth-Year Representative, says, “With USG, students have the ability to bargain collectively and get answers to questions that individuals would never secure on their own.” As to why they joined USG, Sprague adds that they were “motivated by frustration with the student condition. Whether it be wages, dining services, accommodations, or housing, it was clear that students weren’t being listened to.”

General representative positions consist of Year Representatives and College Representatives. According to USG’s website, Year Representatives represent students who fall in the same class year as them. College Representatives represent students whose disciplines fall within their own college, such as the College of Engineering or College of Arts and Sciences.

Isobel Bowker, the College of Engineering representative, joined USG because of some aspects of the university that she wasn’t happy with. “I knew that USG helps advocate for students, their rights, and their concerns, and they were actively recruiting new members, so I decided to go through the appointment process to help make a positive impact for the student body.”

By running for a position with USG, students will have the opportunity to advocate for student-centered interests at a higher level. USG representatives are required to attend weekly meetings, hold office hours, and join one of USG’s standing committees. USG’s standing committees serve to address “various issues and projects currently ongoing within the Student Assembly,” according to USG’s website. USG’s current committees are Events, Political Affairs, Public Affairs, Student Affairs, and Ways and Means.

Tim Peters, a First-Year Representative with USG, says that he joined USG for a few different reasons, one being “that I wanted to be an active part in resolving the issues that my peers may have, ensuring that the matters at hand are actually rectified, and the fact that I have held a number of elected positions over my academic career, and USG felt like a natural progression for me.”

Elections will be held via Involvement Link, and links to the forms for nominations can be found on USG’s website, along with a reminder of the dates for each. Students with any questions should contact Cheyenne Scott, USG Secretary, at usg-secretary@mtu.edu

A brief history of Winter Carnival

As the 100th Winter Carnival approaches, the Michigan Tech community is reminded of the long history the university holds, including its many beloved traditions. To many, Winter Carnival is almost synonymous with Michigan Tech, as the annual festivities have provided decades of memories for current and past Huskies.

The first Winter Carnival, held in February of 1922, was known as the “Ice Carnival,” a one-day celebration held in the old Amphidrome structure in Houghton’s downtown. The Amphidrome, an ice arena that was the original home of many local hockey teams, including the Huskies, was located on the site of present-day Dee Stadium. This pioneering festival boasted a circus theme and featured live music, student performances, and a faculty-student hockey game.

Winter Carnival has been held on Michigan Tech’s campus annually since its 1922 inception, with a few exceptions. There were four-year and two-year lapses during the Great Depression and World War II, respectively.

In 1934, following the Great Depression hiatus, Michigan Tech’s Blue Key National Honor Society Chapter took on the task of organizing Winter Carnival, and they have hosted it ever since. Blue Key grew Winter Carnival from its one-day, Ice Carnival predecessor to the multi-day celebration it is today.

The royalty competition was added in 1928, originally known as the queen competition. Women were judged on their beauty, responses to questions, and agility in various winter sports.

The two-night hockey feature became an integral part of Winter Carnival in 1934. Snow sculptures began popping up around the Houghton community in 1936. 1946 saw the creation of the Stage Revue, and the annual Beard Competition began in 1948.

The Sno Ball, Winter Carnival’s formal dance component, first appeared on the event list in 1959. Due to Michigan Tech’s low population of female students, local women were brought in to dance with male students.

The 1990s saw the addition of other Winter Carnival games, such as Tug-o-War, as the festival became the competition student organizations know it as today. Broomball, which had been played recreationally beforehand, became an official Winter Carnival event during this decade, too.

Winter Carnival has a long and happy history on Michigan Tech’s campus over the past 100 years. Best of luck to Blue Key as they host this year’s carnival —let’s hope the next 100 years are just as memorable!

COVID testing for students and employees

As the spring semester begins, Michigan Tech remains under Campus Health and Safety Level Two. This requires students to wear a mask when inside campus buildings. With the omicron variant of COVID-19 spreading throughout the United States and the Upper Peninsula, many students have voiced concerns on Discord and Reddit about their health and safety on campus. Michigan Tech has provided a couple of resources for students.

COVID-19 testing is available on-demand for Michigan Tech students and employees. Individuals can receive a COVID test in the Rozsa Center basement from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Thursday. No appointment is required, and all tests are free of charge. Results will be emailed directly to the individual and will be available within approximately 24-48 hours.

A COVID-19 vaccination clinic was held Wednesday, Jan. 12 in the Rozsa Center. This was the second of two vaccine clinics the university held this school year. Both the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines were available for first, second, and booster doses. No information has been released by the Michigan Tech Flex Team about any additional clinics that may be occuring.

Additionally, many local organizations are offering COVID-19 vaccines for interested parties. The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department is offering booster appointments at their Hancock office Thursday, Jan. 13. Appointments can be made on their website, wupdhd.org. First, second, and booster doses can also be obtained at Walmart and Walgreens’ Houghton locations. Appointments can be made online at each business’s respective website. The UP Health System – Portage hospital is offering vaccinations at their Hancock apothecary. To schedule an appointment, call the apothecary directly at (906) 483-1919.

The COVID-19 vaccine is free to the public. For more information on the COVID-19 vaccines, visit vaccines.gov or contact a local health provider.

For additional questions or concerns about COVID-19 on Michigan Tech’s campus, email the MTU Flex Team at mtuflex@mtu.edu.

Winter recreation options available to MTU students

As winter approaches, many Michigan Tech students are looking forward to taking advantage of outdoor recreation opportunities available on and near campus.

Through the Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP), students and community members can rent cross country skis and snowshoes for use on the Tech Trails. Individuals can bring their own equipment for use, too. Snowshoes can be rented overnight at a cost of $10 for MTU students and $12 for non-students. Nordic ski equipment passes can be purchased at the Central Ticket Office in the SDC. Cost for MTU students is $15 for a season pass and $25 for non-students. Equipment can be checked out at the OAP office near the Tech Trails. A separate pass must also be purchased for trail usage. Day passes for non-students cost $10 and free for MTU students through the Experience Tech Fee. More information can be found on michigantechrecreation.com

Mont Ripley ski trails are not yet open, but individuals can prepare for the season by purchasing passes. For non-students, passes can be purchased online for $410. Michigan Tech students can receive a free season pass through the Experience Tech Fee. These can be reserved online at mtu.edu/mont-ripley. Equipment (skis, snowboards, and boots) and lockers can be rented in-person at Mont Ripley or on their website.

Mount Bohemia is another option for skiers and snowboarders. Located in Lac La Belle, about 50 minutes north of Houghton, Mount Bohemia offers extreme skiing and snowboarding for experienced athletes. They offer a variety of season passes at different rates. Mount Bohemia also offers lodging, a spa, and other amenities. For more information, visit mtbohemia.com.

For sledheads, the Keweenaw boasts over 230 miles of snowmobile trails, according to the Keweenaw Convention and Visitors Bureau (keweenaw.info). The opening date of the trails depends on snowfall. These trails connect Houghton and Hancock with Calumet and Copper Harbor. Michigan Tech also offers snowmobile parking permits for $35 for those adventurous students who wish to take an alternative route to campus in the winter months. More information can be found at mtu.edu/transportation/registration.
