Pewter Rabbit Antiques adds shine to Pearl Street

Shelley Maynard has developed an appreciation for the value and character that is found in antiques. Because of this, Maynard is the owner of a local boutique, Pewter Rabbit Antiques, in downtown Eugene. This quaint boutique has unique character and charm, which is what keeps people coming back in.

“I love meeting the people who come in to the store and hearing their stories,” Maynard said. “Every day is different.”

Her appreciation for antiques comes from the fact that as a child growing up in Pennsylvania, she would constantly go to flea markets and hang out at the local second-hand store.

After getting married and moving to Oregon in 1971, she didn’t have a lot of money so she would go to Goodwill and buy things for 10 cents then go to the local flea market and sell them for 20 cents.

About 10 years later, in 1982, she opened Pewter Rabbit Antiques. It was originally located on Fifth Avenue but moved 15 years ago to its current location in the heart of downtown between Pearl and Broadway streets.

The store isn’t very large but is packed tight with all sorts of antiques, creating a maze-like feel when walking through. It’s the type of store you could spend all afternoon in and not even see everything. Ranging from old books to jewelry and little trinkets, there is really something in there for everyone.

The store sells an abundance of items. However, vintage jewelry and home décor are the most popular. The items found at Pewter Rabbit Antiques sell for a fraction of the price of contemporary stores, and they are of better quality. The things you will find in this store also come with a bit of character. All the antiques have been around the block a time or two, making each item especially different and unique.

Pewter Rabbit Antiques is a great place to go if you’re looking to buy a gift. Everything is sold at a reasonable price and you will find things here that you won’t find elsewhere.

Maynard hand selects everything that you will find in her store mainly from Eugene locals. Many people contact her and she will makes trips to their homes to see what they have to sell.

If you are a collector of some sort, Pewter Rabbit Antiques has a collectors program where they will alert you if something you collect has made its way into the store. Being the owner of an antique shop, it is inevitable that Maynard has a collection of her own. “I collect old toys and folk art,” she said.

Pewter Rabbit Antiques is home to six other employees who have a similar passion for antique goods like that of Maynard. The antique shop is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Stop by and take a peek and get lost among the antiques.

Two UO students create their own online vintage fashion brand, ‘Barstad Collective’

In a predominantly female industry, one new online vintage store sells exclusively to men. It’s called Barstad Collective, an online shop that provides men with a curated selection of vintage goods.

Until the opening of Barstad Collective last March, vintage online retail for men wasn’t very common. The brand embraces individualism, selling items that are hand-selected and can’t be found anywhere else. Barstad Collective’s owners prides themselves on giving every man the opportunity to set himself apart from others when it comes to fashion.

Metcalf came up with the idea for the company while shopping online.

“I was online, searching for men’s vintage clothing and I could not find a website where I could find a solid selection of fashionably relevant vintage menswear,” Metcalf said. So he considered this market an opportunity. “I know there are guys like me who don’t like always wearing clothes from major menswear brands.”

Metcalf began buying clothes and other goods and seeing how they sold on eBay.

The name Barstad came from Metcalf’s middle name and his mother’s maiden name. The idea of the “collective” is that all of these one-of-a-kind items fall under the same brand umbrella — they’re apart of a collection of curated items.

Barstad Collective is currently composed of three people: Odenborg, Metcalf and Ian Murphy. Metcalf is responsible for the majority of the buying and oversees everything. Odenborg handles the creative direction, brand management and marketing. Murphy is in charge of handling finances and web analytics.

“We wanted to create an image all about the ‘American man,’” Odenborg said. “This man is someone who is comfortable with who he is.”

Metcalf does most of his buying locally in Oregon and California but makes purchases from all over the country.

The company pioneers a membership rental program where customers can select from three packages that will then be shipped to them monthly. Each package contains a number of shirts, jackets and accessories.

“You don’t necessarily pick out each item, they are hand selected for you, so you may end up getting something that you would never pick out but actually really like,” Odenborg said.

The company has been successful thus far, though the team believes there is a lot of room for growth.

“People are buying our product which means we are doing something that fills a need in the market,” Odenborg said. The company uses Nasty Gal as a business model. “Nasty Gal began in a similar way as a women’s vintage find on eBay and grew within a few years and is now in Forbes.”

In the next year the company hopes to expand to Asian markets. They currently have a Taiwanese brand ambassador that is helping market the brand overseas. They also hope to continue to gain popularity specifically through menswear blogs and by creating brand awareness around campus.

UO junior Sam Miller said he is curious about the brand.

“I haven’t heard of Barstad Collective, but that is definitely something I would check out.”

Closet profile: Joseph Bakke

Year: Junior

Hometown: Eugene, Ore.

Major: Computer science

Signature style: “Business casual, but kind of hipster. Ties are really my go-to.”

Fashion Inspiration: Tumblr and a blog called “Edwards hair.”

Recent purchase you love: Wolverine 1000 Mile Boots. “They are amazing boots, probably the most expensive thing I have ever bought, but the plan is to have them last for 20 years.”

A trend you love right now: “Jean jackets are in right now, and I am super into that. Chambray also, those two kind of create that all-American work wear image.”

A trend you hate right now: Boat shoes.

Favorite place to shop: J crew, Levi, Brooklyn Industry.

How would you define Eugene style: “That’s is a good question, it’s pretty diverse actually. Campus style you see a lot of hipster trends, and people looking professional, and people who don’t give a crap. In the greater Eugene area you have people who came here in the 60s, dads who wear polos and jeans that are too small for them, so there is a huge diversity.”

19th annual jewelry sale is a success for students

The 19th annual “Cheap Jewelry Sale” began today at 9 a.m. and will continue until 6 p.m. where alumni and Bachelor of Fine Arts students in the jewelry and metalsmithing program proudly showcase their unique creations in the lobby of Lawrence Hall.

Each student had to produce a jewelry collection of at least 15 pieces including rings, necklaces, earings, glasses and more. All of the jewelry is selling for $35 or less hence the name, “Cheap Jewelry Sale.”

The quality of these collections, however, is anything but cheap. Students use a range of materials from silver to nontraditional materials such as wood, plastics and rubber, creating a diverse selection of jewelry to choose from.

Money raised will go toward guest lectures and studio equipment for the art department. These students are being rewarded for their hard work through the success of the sale.

Students are overcome with excitement due the fact that some students have sold so much within the first 45 minutes of the sale.

“This feels great and weird and awesome. I have spent so much time doing everything and it’s, what, 9:45 and I have sold out of almost everything,” junior material and product studies major Paolo Bocchio said.

Senior art major Kirk Wilson is president of the American Sign Language Club, which was his inspiration for his jewelry collection. Wilson is selling necklaces and earings, made of sterling silver that have a small sign language hand on the saying things from “I love you” to “U of O.” He also has already sold out of much of his collection.

The styles of jewelry at the show vary. One student, Sihui Zhang, a fifth-year Bachelor of Fine Arts student, has a collection of necklaces that resemble something like dripping metal. Her idea behind this collection was to transition from antique to contemporary.

Designers stand by to give more insight on their collections, giving each piece more personality.
