With more safety events, U seeks student input

With this school year’s uptick in violent crime on and around the University of Minnesota campus, officials have held more events focused on safety than in years past.

But University leaders say those events need more input from students to be effective.

University Services Vice President Pam Wheelock said communicating with students and getting their feedback on safety issues can be difficult.

U professor busy with state budgeting

Laura Kalambokidis is so busy forecasting Minnesota’s budget that she doesn’t have time to teach her applied economics course at the University of Minnesota.

As the state economist, Kalambokidis is finishing up Minnesota’s biannual budget forecast, which is due  Friday. State lawmakers will use the forecast to consider how they appropriate funds in the legislative session.

University health services rebrand

Health care at the University of Minnesota has a new name.

The school, University of Minnesota Physicians and Fairview Health Services launched a new brand of health care, called University of Minnesota Health, earlier this month.

The new brand streamlines hospitals, clinics and facilities previously operating under separate methods into one care model and one electronic medical record. This will make the patient and staff experience compatible and team-focused, University of Minnesota Physicians CEO Dr. Bobbi Daniels said.

Greeks celebrate leadership, progress

Navita Lakhram wiped tears from her face before turning to accept her Greek Member of the Year Award on Sunday night. Coffman Union’s Great Hall roared with applause as she took the award and walked off stage.

Lakhram was one of three recognized as standouts in the greek community last year who won awards at the ceremony, which for the first time honored leaders from the Multicultural Greek Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council.

HEAPR funds vary by campus

About 43 percent of the University of Minnesota’s 2014 state funding request is money to renovate and maintain buildings throughout the system.

Per student capita, the Twin Cities dominates the $100 million Higher Education Asset Preservation and Renovation request, representing 84 percent of the total amount.

Pitino positive amid woes

Gophers head coach Richard Pitino has the moxy of well-known life coach Tony Robbins.

He might not have the books, the movie cameos or the goatee Robbins has, but the head coach definitely has the mindset. Pitino’s glass always seems to be half-full.

Though his team laid two eggs against Illinois and Ohio State, Pitino said he was excited to get back on the court for the battle with No. 20 Iowa on Tuesday night.

Students and residents work in tandem

When issues surface in neighborhoods with a strong mix of college students and more permanent residents, it’s not always clear whether the two groups will work together.

The lifestyles of young students and those of families who have settled down can seem incompatible. The annual turnover of student residents can also cause problems. For example, last year, the city of Minneapolis sent an email warning Dinkytown property owners that it would bill them due to students piling up garbage when they moved out in August.

Students dance all night for children’s health

Many pediatric patients at the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital walk the halls to regain their strength during recovery.

Richie Lange followed this routine almost daily during his 60-day stay last year for Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.

Now, the 12-year-old is helping raise funds so future patients can recover in a more kid-friendly area.

The cost of college, exposed

Krista has been entertaining at The Seville, an adult entertainment club, for almost four years. In May, she will graduate from Concordia University, a four-year private school with a $20,000 annual sticker price.

When guests ask her if she’s using her stripping money to pay for college, she said, her answer is sometimes met with a nudge, a wink and heavy-handed sarcasm.
