Stollings introduced as new head coach

By: Jack Satzinger

In 1995, Marlene Stollings and the Ohio State Buckeyes ran on to the Williams Arena floor and put up 93 points on the Gophers in a double-digit win.

Stollings returned to the Barn on Tuesday afternoon, but this time as Minnesota’s new head coach.

Stollings, who later transferred to Ohio University to finish her schooling, plans on many more 90-point games  — but this time with the Gophers in the winning column.

South St. Paul in the net

By: Samuel Gordon

Adam Wilcox returned to South St. Paul’s Wakota Arena one Friday night during his freshman year of college.

Wilcox practically grew up at the 52-year-old rink, but on this night, he was just a spectator — on hand for his younger sister Lauren’s hockey game.

Wilcox bumped into his high school coach, Jeff Lagoo, at the game, and the two struck up what Lagoo described as “a good talk.”

As the conversation progressed, however, swarms of children flocked around the two.

Dr Date

Dr. Date,

I’ve worked nights for the better part of this semester. The job is alright, and the pay is great, but it means that I only work with two people. The same two people — every shift.

In 100 years, 90 drawings

By: Melanie Richtman

The idea of an architecture drawing exhibition may bring to mind a vast display of blueprints.

But Northrop Gallery’s new exhibition, “100 Years of Student Drawings,” is unexpectedly colorful.

“These are works of art, as well as historical artifacts,” College of Design Dean Thomas Fisher said. “You’ll see the incredible imagination of our students at the time.”

The exhibition is a collection of 90 pieces spanning from 1913 to 2013 and showcases design styles from Beaux-Arts to the digital age.

Hodnett discovers her passion in the water

By: Jack Satzinger

Lynn Hodnett was a longtime softball player before she set foot in a boat five years ago. While she loved taking the field, she’s found her true calling on the water.

“I think rowing just felt more right,” she said. “It was a better fit for my competitive outlet.”

While most accomplished athletes crave competition, Hodnett takes it a step further in the water.

She doesn’t like rowing for the satisfaction of winning or because it’s fun — she likes the sport because it pushes her body to its limits.

Minnesota will not renew Dale’s expiring contract

By: David Nelson

Gophers head men’s swimming coach Dennis Dale won’t return to the program next year, the University announced in a release Wednesday morning.

University associate athletics director for strategic communications Chris Werle told the Minnesota Daily that Dale’s contract expired and the University decided not to renew it.

Dale arrived on campus in 1985 to coach a team that hadn’t placed higher than fourth in the Big Ten in more than 20 years.

Siegmeier ready to repeat as Big Ten champ

By: Megan Ryan

The concept of trajectory can be a tricky thing, but it hasn’t seemed to be a problem for Gophers senior pole vaulter Zach Siegmeier.

He ended his junior track and field season with a big jump — literally — and won the Big Ten outdoor championships, his first major competition gold.

That success, however, didn’t cut into his focus for the summer and fall. Instead, Siegmeier continued his upward curve by knocking off personal bests before winning another title at the Big Ten indoor championships this season.

Courter returns from injury, leads team

By: Dane Mizutani

Julia Courter can be heard from across the Baseline Tennis Center during competitions. Her voice echoes throughout the facility — either celebrating after a won point or cheering on her teammates.

“She brings a lot to the team,” head coach Chuck Merzbacher said. “She has great energy, and she’s really positive. She sets the tone.”

It’s for that reason that the team is happy to have her back in the lineup after she missed all of last season with a left wrist injury.
