In their 63-52 loss Saturday at Creighton, the Gophers couldn’t stop Bluejays forward Sarah Nelson, who scored a game-high 22 points.
“Nelson played the four position, and she was extremely versatile,” Minnesota head coach Pam Borton said. “I thought she was a really tough matchup for our team.”
In Wednesday night’s game against Kansas, the Gophers will have to deal with another athletic post player — Chelsea Gardner.
Gardner scored 24 points and reeled in 13 rebounds in Kansas’ first game of the season.

The Gophers attempted a lot of three-point shots Tuesday night.
It may have been too many — especially for a team that shot just 28.6 percent from the beyond the arc in the game.
Minnesota took 28 total threes — 17 in the first half — but still managed an 82-72 victory over Coastal Carolina at Williams Arena.
“We fell in love with the three,” junior guard Andre Hollins said. “We should have attacked them [and gotten] to the foul line.”

In the offseason, the Gophers lost Devin Crawford-Tufts and Andre McDonald — two of the team’s most talented wide receivers.
They might have just lost a third.
Senior Derrick Engel went down with a knee injury during practice Sunday afternoon.
Gophers head coach Jerry Kill said at his Tuesday press conference that he would not comment on whether Engel tore his anterior cruciate ligament until he knew test results.

When Gary Johnson’s wife told him they were having guests, he set out chairs and made coffee. He didn’t realize the meeting about women’s health in Sierra Leone would end up taking him across the globe.
Johnson, a former University faculty member, is part of the Rural Health Care Initiative, a new nonprofit working to improve health resources for pregnant women in Sierra Leone’s remote chiefdom of Tikonko.

As the Minnesota Vikings prepare to play at TCF Bank Stadium next year, the team is bringing along funds for surrounding neighborhoods.
The football team will contribute $90,000 in cash and $35,000 in in-kind contributions per season for “high-visibility” projects in the neighborhoods around the University of Minnesota. University Community Relations outlined how it and the football team will grant the funds at a meeting Wednesday night in Southeast Como.

Minnesota’s women’s basketball team finished up its exhibition slate Saturday with a 69-54 win over Minnesota State-Moorhead at Williams Arena.
After a hotly contested first half, the Gophers pulled away in the second en route to the 15-point win.
