Shoveling snow comes with health risks

By: Tyler Gieseke

While shoveling snow, Tai Do said he doesn’t take it slow — a practice some say could lead to injury.

The University of Minnesota psychology and sociology senior said he shovels quickly to get inside and out of the cold.

Some students say they aren’t aware that there are correct ways to shovel to avoid health risks, which could include potential back injuries and heart strain. By following some simple tips, faculty, staff and students can have clear sidewalks and healthy bodies this winter.

Students should learn self-defense

By: Shoshiro Watanabe – University student

In a Nov. 12 column, Luis Ruuska suggests that taking proactive safety measures would make both campus and students safer. I agree with Ruuska’s idea — but not completely.

Carrying a weapon can be counterproductive. If you had a weapon and someone threatened you with a gun, it might prompt them to become more violent or even shoot.

First, if you want to carry a gun, you need to know how to use it. Second, even if you know how to use it, carrying a gun might be counterproductive.

Come winter, chicken owners balk

By: Alexi Gusso

Mary Britton Clouse has 20 rescued chickens living in her Minneapolis home. On Sunday, one wandered off.

She searched for the lost companion in her house, which doubles as a sanctuary for stray and abandoned chickens.

Her organization, Chicken Run Rescue, sees an increase in rescue requests during the colder months when people do not always want to take care of their birds.

Britton Clouse said people sometimes drop chickens off at her door.
