Gophers pummel Hoosiers 35-6

By: Jared Christensen

In its first dual since moving back to No. 2 in the NCAA rankings, the Gophers wrestling team pounced on Indiana from the get-go in a 35-6 rout.

It was a dominant win, but it didn’t come without a speed bump — two-time defending NCAA heavyweight champion Tony Nelson dropped another match, his third loss in a row and fourth in his last six matches.

Nelson expressed respect for his opponent after the match, but said he’s looking forward to meeting him again in the Big Ten and, potentially, the NCAA tournaments.

The necessity of teachers’ unions

By: Ronald Dixon

The Anoka-Hennepin school district’s 3,000 teachers recently decided that they would no longer be staying late, a practice schools often require to edit lesson plans, grade papers and input test scores.

At first glance, it may appear these teachers are acting only in their own interest, as if students’ needs are no longer important. But closer inspection disproves this assumption.

Dr. Date

Dr. Date,

What’s the appropriate response when you run into someone you went out with briefly? I’ve been having awkward encounters with girls I took on one or two dates but then decided not to see again. Usually I just haven’t contacted them again, or if they called/texted me, I said something along the lines of “Hey, it was fun, but I don’t really see this going anywhere.”

FERPA’S failures are cause for concern

By: Luis Ruuska

A growing number of college students are concerned about how colleges are keeping their personal data confidential, and it’s not hard to see why.

Even before they are admitted to their future school, students receive requests to provide information, and this only develops throughout their college career. Earlier this month, Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., said he would introduce legislation to protect student privacy because of recent changes to the Family Education and Privacy Act.

Deadline to change classes extended

By: Mitchell Yurkowitz

The University of Minnesota is extending the deadline to receive a full refund for dropped classes this semester.

Because Monday classes haven’t happened yet due to a holiday and University-wide cancellation, students will have an extra week to drop a class without risking financial penalties.

Before, students had to drop a class before Jan. 29 to be guaranteed a full refund. But administrators have extended the deadline to Feb. 3 for this semester.

Students’ free speech

By: Derek Olson

Arizona State University  expelled the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity last week after it held a Martin Luther King, Jr.-themed party. Pictures surfaced on social media of students dressed in hip-hop style clothing with hashtags invoking black stereotypes. To say the least, it was an inappropriate way to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Come winter, a wonderland offshore

By: Callie Sacarelos

Minnesotans have learned that the only way to survive the winter year after to year is to embrace the cold and make the most of the snow and ice.

That would explain the record-breaking 20,000 people who visited the biannual Art Shanty Projects on Medicine Lake during the dead of winter in 2012.

The artfully constructed ice houses return this year but are calling White Bear Lake their new home.
