Former Minneapolis mayor R.T. Rybak strolled through a bustling Rapson Hall classroom Monday night, greeting and joking with students before he began teaching his first class at the University of Minnesota.
With his joint appointment through the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and the College of Design, Rybak will give University students a taste of the knowledge he’s gathered from serving 12 years in City Hall.
“I hope they come out of this with a realistic idea of what it’s like to lead,” Rybak said.

Upon reading the Jan. 28 Minnesota Daily article, “Sexual assault reported at Gophers athletes’ apartment,” I was shocked at the University of Minnesota’s reaction to the alleged crime.
Again, the University has no comment. You’d think if a crime as serious as a sexual assault was reported involving University athletes, someone would have something to say, especially considering there was another witness involved.

Starting Monday, buildings on the University of Minnesota’s West Bank will have limited access.
University Services Vice President Pamela Wheelock sent an email to University students, faculty and staff Saturday announcing the start of the Building Access Pilot Program, which administrators launched in response to the rise in brazen crimes this year.
The program aims to increase security and gather information about how buildings are used, and it will require U Cards for access to seven buildings on campus during specific “University hours.”

Members of the Minnesota House of Representatives toured labs on the University’s St. Paul campus Thursday to evaluate whether buildings need state funding for expansion or upkeep.
Representatives said places on the St. Paul campus could benefit from the state funding for construction, but members must carefully select projects when drafting the chamber’s bonding bill because the state has many competing needs.

Minnesota’s locker room following a 55-54 loss to Northwestern resembled a stereotypical uninhabited desert scene with a lone tumbleweed trundling through the backdrop.
Desolate.
Those players who could bear to stay at their lockers fought back tears — some unsuccessfully.
“You never want your guys to cry, but certainly it’s great when they care,” head coach Richard Pitino said. “They care about winning.
“That’s the first step, certainly, toward building a winning program.”

Kevin Johnson feels unsafe around police, especially when he’s walking around the University of Minnesota campus. After the school boosted police presence this fall, Johnson said he felt especially uneasy.
“Adding police is not going to make me feel safer. Increasing patrol is not going to make me feel safer,” said Johnson, a senior studying communications and African American and African studies.

Despite class cancellations last week, some University of Minnesota employees still had to go to work.
Administrators canceled class for faculty and students last Monday and Tuesday due to extreme cold weather. But the University stayed open, which left some employees upset.
“They saw it as a message that staff safety and concerns are not taken into account,” said Cherrene Horazuk, president of the University of Minnesota Clerical Workers union.

Minnesotans are used to the cold, but this year’s unusually frigid winter has presented more health risks than usual.
Health experts said they’ve treated more frostbite cases this year than in past years, and recommend keeping skin covered on days with significant risk of frostbite to bare skin.
With wind chills dropping to about 40 degrees below zero on Jan. 27, University of Minnesota officials canceled classes until noon on Jan. 28. It was the first cancellation due to cold weather in more than a decade.

While a report showed cancer rates are normal in the Southeast Como neighborhood, residents are concerned about other health risks from the trichloroethylene, or TCE, soil vapors contaminating the area.
The Minnesota Department of Health released a report last month, which compared the number of cancer cases observed from 2001 to 2010 against those expected for residents from the 55414 ZIP code.

This season, Big Ten road wins have been elusive for the Gophers, and so has consistent play from members of their supporting cast.
Minnesota (14-9, 3-6 Big Ten) managed to buck both of those trends over the weekend with an 85-69 victory against Michigan (14-8, 5-4) behind strong play from stars and role players alike.
“We bounced back from a pretty awful two games, and they were very resilient,” head coach Pam Borton told reporters after the game.
