Up-and-coming indie-pop artist Quinn XCII performed at WOW Hall on March 2, 2017. The Denver-born, Detroit-raised musician was considered one of 2016’s most exciting new artists and is well-acquainted with the Spotify Global Viral Chart, first appearing with producer ayokay in the number one spot for “Kings of Summer.” His music is a combination of electronic, hip hop, and tropical influences.
YouTubers Alex Aiono and William Singe came together for a collaborative performance on “The Changes Tour.” Rising to fame via their unique covers of popular R&B/hip hop hits, both Aiono and Singe are not only performing said covers live, but debuting their own new music. They performed to a sold-out crowd at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, Oregon, on Feb. 23.
The Emerald’s time-honored tradition of asking the campus community about love and romance on Feb. 14. Responses are varied, but honest — and sometimes brutal.
The Shivas began as three 15-year-olds playing music in their parents’ garages in Vancouver, Washington. Now, Jared Molyneux as lead guitarist, Kristen Leonard on drums, and Eric Shanafelt on bass, are based in Portland. The three of them have been playing together for ten years and have toured world wide, spending four to six months on the road each year. The three of them let the Emerald into one of their practice spaces and told us a little about what it’s like to be in the group.

R&B and singer/songwriter SoMo recently visited Portland on his “Less Stress More Love” tour. The Emerald sat down with SoMo to discuss his loyal fan base, his songwriting process, and more.
During the concert, it was very apparent that the fans of SoMo had nothing but love for the artist. The passion and love he displays while performing is SoMo’s way of giving back. When asked what is different about this tour than his previous ones, SoMo says, “I feel like this is my reconnection with the fans,” seeing as it’s been a while since he’s put out new music. He wants to show the die-hard fans his appreciation.
As a songwriter, SoMo takes great pride in the music he produces. He likes to “freestyle over beats” and he always sings melodies, making sure he’s always recording. Engaging with his fans and really connecting with them is important to him.
His song “Ride” was one of the first songs he ever wrote and “now it’s double platinum.” “The first night we dropped that on YouTube, I was convinced this song is going to go platinum if I have to put it on ten albums,” says SoMo.
“They’re all my babies,” he said about the songs he’s written.
“I feel like I’m a real musician and a real songwriter,” says SoMo. “I’m really grateful to be able to make music.”

Gnash performs at a low-key show in Portland, Oregon. Singer/songwriter Gnash has quickly made his way up the charts since the release of his first EP, u, in 2015. Currently sitting at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, Gnash is becoming a very popular musician in the U.S. and all over the world. He recently visited the Hawthorne Theater in Portland, Oregon, on Oct. 29, 2016, during his “u, me + us” tour.
Gnash’s show was certainly one to remember. As a singer, songwriter, rapper and DJ, Gnash knows quite a lot about how to entertain an audience. The crowd was engaged the whole time, singing along to every song without skipping a beat. The stage was set up in a way that was almost relaxing — the mic stands were lit up with string lights and Gnash brought out incense. The atmosphere felt very familiar and comfortable but was also excited and upbeat, similar to his style of music.
