A summer spent with his grandfather opened up a world of opportunity for Gophers freshman standout Matic Spec.

It came through a tennis racquet and ball.

Minnesota is back on the course this weekend as the spring season starts back up.

The Gophers will head down to Palm Coast, Fla., for Big Ten match play Sunday and Monday.

“We are a determined team after the fall [season] with a lot to prove,” head coach John Carlson said. “I really think our best is yet to come.”

The Gophers have big shoes to fill this year after last season’s team won its first Big Ten title since 2007 and Carlson earned the Big Ten Coach of the Year award.

But Carlson said he thinks this team could be even better.

Gardner goes from injury to all-around

By: Brad Bobel

Freshman Ciara Gardner came to college unable to do much because to a shoulder surgery from the year before.

“This summer, all she could do was hang on the bar. She couldn’t do much more than that,” interim head coach Jenny Hansen said.

But now Gardner is back to full strength, and she flashed her skills last Saturday, competing in all four events for the first time in her collegiate career. She finished fifth.

“It was fun to be back out there competing in all four events again,” Gardner said.

Dr. Date

Dr. Date,

So I’ve been seeing this bombshell of a man for about six months. We met during orientation, and he’s perfect. We like the same things. We have similar ambitions. We rarely fight — and when we do, it doesn’t last for more than a couple of hours. We’re basically soul mates.

That said, I’ve had my heart ripped out in the past, and as much as I try, I still find myself putting up a bit of a wall whenever he tries to get close.

Whose Diversity? protest misses the mark

On Monday, 13 people were arrested after they occupied University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler’s office. The protesters were warned they’d be arrested if they didn’t leave the premises by 6 p.m. They had the option to leave without going to jail, but they didn’t take it, seemingly on the principle of wanting to “legitimize” their activism.

Time to make a case for interns

By: Jared Rogers-Martin

While I was studying at a coffee shop, a man sat down next to me. His three-piece suit and smile suggested a career in sales.

But instead of selling a product, he actually interviewed a seemingly endless stream of students for an internship at College Works Painting. This company teaches students to run their own small painting businesses, all while some of the interns’ profits stay with College Works Painting.
