Dr. Date

Dr. Date,

This past weekend, I hooked up with a girl whom I had just met the night before. Throughout the evening, we talked about seeing each other again and whatnot in the coming weeks. She left shortly after we shared breakfast and a shower, but the thought of her has remained in my mind since — a rare occurrence for myself, being a somewhat jaded, early-20-somethings man.

Williams preps for draft

By: Grant Donald

A year ago, former defensive tackle Ra’Shede Hageman was on track to be the first University of Minnesota player selected in the first round of the NFL Draft since 2006.

Hageman, however, slipped to the fifth pick of the second round, extending Minnesota’s first-round drought for yet another year.

But it seems like the streak will only last one more month, as former Gophers tight end Maxx Williams’ chances of being a first-round pick seems increasingly promising with every new mock draft release.

City ordinance could increase fees for owners of third-tier properties

By: Elizabeth Smith

The Minneapolis City Council is considering an ordinance this spring that could charge landlords with high-maintenance properties more to keep their licenses.

Property owners say if the measure passes, they may have to increase tenants’ rent.

The goal of the proposed ordinance is to charge rental property owners for the amount of time and resources they use from the city.

The city’s Director of Regulatory Services Nuria Rivera-Vandermyde said the proposal would give property owners an economic incentive to take better care of their properties.

A call to teach, serve

By: Meghna Sohoni, University Student, Teach For America corps

When I think about my time here at the University of Minnesota, I think about many incredible experiences: finishing my thesis, reading for hours on the grass in the mall and making some of my closest friends. But I also think about that gnawing question that always lurked: What am I going to do after I leave this place?

But the question of what I could do after graduation actually has a second part — what should I do?

MN sex offender laws need update

In St. Paul, a federal trial is underway to determine whether it’s constitutional to indefinitely detain convicted sex offenders even after they have served their terms in prison, according to the Star Tribune.

It’s expected that the trial will find the practice unconstitutional. As a result, Minnesota legislators are already working to introduce changes to the Minnesota Sex Offender Program by expanding community reintegration programs and contacting more third-party housing agencies.
