Houston baseball walked away with a one point victory comeback in their mid-week matchup against McNeese at Schroeder Park.

After scoring four runs in the first two innings, Mcneese established a commanding 4-0 lead.

The Cougars answered with back-to-back doubles from freshman infielder Ace Reese and senior outfielder Cary Arbolida, which sent both senior catcher Anthony Tulimero and Reese across the plate.

Senior outfielder Tre Jones hit a single along the right side that drove Arbolida home and put the Cougars within one.

Mcneese scored a run of their own, and brought in three unanswered runs at the top of the fourth, bringing the score to 8-3.

At the bottom of the seventh, Tulimero drove in senior catcher Jonathan French home after a fly out to the infield.

Senior infielder Harold Coll chipped into the deficit, and hit a single plating senior utility Justin Murray and sophomore infielder Coby Dejesus. To cap off the five-spot inning, Reese and Coll crossed the plate off a Mcneese error.

The Cougars finished victorious with a score of 9-8 after a Mcneese wild pitch in the 10th inning with senior outfielder Jacob Schoenvogel coming home.

Currently, the Cougars are competing in a series with UCF at Schroeder Park.

UH softball takes one game against Texas Tech in weekend series

UH softball avoided a sweep, winning one of three against Texas Tech over the weekend. The Cougars sit at last in the Big 12 with only four conference wins this season.

Game 1

The Red Raiders came out swinging, scoring four runs in the opening three innings. The Cougars got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when junior infielder Lair Beautae launched a single home run.

Following a wild pitch that allowed Texas Tech to tie the game at five runs in the top of the fourth, graduate utility Bree Cantu of Houston cut the lead to two runs with a two-run home run to left field that also scored graduate outfielder Kennedy Thomas.

Texas Tech led 6-4 going into the seventh inning after both teams swapped runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Red Raiders increased their lead to three runs with their fourth home run, but Houston would not go away in the bottom of the inning.

The Cougars had two runners in scoring position and graduate infielder Jazmyn Rollin scored on a groundout by Thomas to bring the team closer to victory. The rally ultimately failed as a Texas Tech challenge led to the third out, securing a 7-6 Red Raider win.

Game 2

Back-to-back singles from Beautae and Rollin gave Houston two runs early in the game, and both players advanced to scoring position thanks to a sacrifice bunt by junior utility Turiya Coleman.

Rollin scored two runs to give the Cougars the lead, while Cantu brought home Beautae with a ground out.

In the third, the Cougars scored two additional runs. Beautae would cross the plate after a Rollin single. Coleman would later hit a single to center field, and Rollin, who had advanced to second on an error, came around to score.

In the fourth, Houston scored two more runs, both on wild pitches. Two wild pitches by the Red Raiders drove graduate outfielder Paige Hulsey and Cantu over the plate.

The Cougars scored two runs in an inning for the fourth time to seal the walk-off victory. Beautae crossed home plate after advancing to third on a double and wild pitch. Freshman outfielder Jordee Wilkins scored on a ground out by Cantu to cap off the 8-0 victory by run rule.

Game 3

Texas Tech got out to an immediate start in the series finale. With four runs in the second and one in the fifth inning, the Red Raiders got off to a 5-0 lead, putting Houston on their heels entering the sixth inning.

Houston wouldn’t concede without a fight, jabbing back with a ground out RBI from Coleman sending Beautae across home plate. The Cougar’s last run would come after a double from Cantu to send Wilkins home capping off a 5-2 loss.

UH baseball combines for 35 runs in shutouts over HCU, Southern

UH lit up the scoreboard in back-to-back home games against HCU and Southern. | Anh Le/The Cougar

Cougar baseball put up a total of 35 runs against both Houston Christian and Southern University while holding both teams scoreless in their contests.

Game 1

The UH baseball team took full control on Tuesday night against Houston Christian holding the Huskies to zero runs and finishing triumphantly with a score of 10-0.

Senior infielder Harold Coll hit to left center to start the game for the Cougars, setting up sophomore infielder Coby DeJesus to reach home plate and put UH on the board.

Houston would use the initial run as momentum as they would score three consecutive runs after an HCU throwing error sending senior outfielder Cary Arbolida home. Junior outfielder Cameron Nickens singled up the middle sending freshman catcher Conner Bennett to home plate. Nickens would score the last point of the inning for the Cougars after a bunt from senior utility Justin Murray.

The Cougars wouldn’t stop there as Arbidola, freshman infielder Ace Reese and Coll would all get a taste of home plate after a double from senior catcher Jonathan French. French wasn’t done impacting the game, as he would come home after a wild pitch from the Huskies. The last two Cougar runs would come fromfreshman infielder Anthony Avalos and Dejesus, off of a walk and a wild pitch.

Game 2

UH hit a school-record 10 doubles in its 25-0 win over Southern Wednesday night.

The Cougars got out to a quick start, scoring three runs in the first inning thanks to an RBI from senior catcher Anthony Tulimero that drove Murray home. Coll would cross home plate as Reese went up to the plate and doubled to left center, taking advantage of a Southern error in the outfield. After that, Reese was sent home by Arbolida’s ball down the right-field line.

Houston would not let up in the second, as senior outfielder Tre Jones scored after DeJesus sent a ball through the right side. Dejesus was sent home with a double by Tulimero. Coll was the next player to bat, and he gave the Cougars a 7-0 lead with a home run.

In the third, the Cougars would tally up three more runs off of singles from both DeJesus and Tulimero and a double from Murray sending DeJesus home.

The Cougars scored five runs after sophomore infielder Thomas Lyssy’s walk and a grand slam from Bennett sending Lyssey, Avalos and Nickens home putting them up 15-0 at the end of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Arbidola continued to be extremely hot, hitting a home run to left field to start the Cougars off. Senior utility Alex Lopez was sent across home plate by Avalos off an RBI on a ground out. Bennett took the plate once more and drove Nickens across the plate with a single.

In the sixth inning, the Cougars would send seven runners home after an error and junior catcher Kenneth Jimenez’s single. Both Jones and Benett hit doubles, sending Arbidola and Jones home.

Next up, the Cougars will travel to Cincinnati to play the Bearcats on Friday.

UH softball defeated cross-town rival Houston Christian Tuesday night at Cougar Softball Stadium by a score of 12-10.

A five-run fifth for Houston gave the Coogs a heavy 12-7 lead thanks in part to Husky errors in the bottom of the fifth inning, which allowed the Coogs to score three. Rollin then stepped up to the plate and hit a single to send junior infielder Lair Beautae home. Graduate Kennedy Thomas, graduate pitcher Shelby Smith and freshman infielder Bethany Aguilar all hit singles to send three Cougars across home plate.

However, the meeting was nothing short of a wild matchup. After HCU tallied the first run of the night, the Cougars answered with two runs of their own when junior Utility Turiya Coleman and
graduate infielder Jazmyn Rollin crossed home plate to put Houston up one.

Houston extended their lead to 5-2 after three innings when freshman outfielder Mikalah Nitta and Rollin knocked singles to drive three Cougars over home plate, breaking the 2-2 the Huskies established in the third.

The Huskies did not back down and reestablished their final lead in the fifth, but went on to score three more before the game ended.

UH improved to 22-14 on the season. Next up, the Cougars will compete in a weekend series on April 6-8 against Oklahoma State at Home.
