Don’t play games with others’ cultures

The University of North Dakota recently changed its team name from the Fighting Sioux to the Fighting Hawks. 
 
Voters picked the new name through an online vote in mid-November. The “Fighting Hawks” name beat out all the other options, winning 57 percent of the vote.

The Girls celebrate the holidays

Many years ago the Minneapolis-based musical group the Girls planned on retiring. The group consisted of six women who performed interchangeably in smaller groups.
 
Before retirement, the Girls decided to stage one final show. 
 
“Our final show we chose to use all six of the Girls,” group member Judi Vinar said. “That started a trend.

Yesterday, I heard a coworker in my office remark, “Snow, December — and just like that, the holiday season is here.” He’s not wrong. On my daily commute, I pass trees covered in lights and billboards displaying good tidings.
