GHC Chargers’ basketball players receive GCAA conference awards

Members of the Georgia Highlands College men’s basketball team have recently received conference awards from the GCAA.

GHC’s Kyvon Davenport received the Conference Player of the Year. Davenport received this award because averages 17.1 points per game, 10.5 rebounds per game and 2.9 blocks per game. Davenport has also had 20 double-doubles throughout the course of the season.

Ty’lik Evans has received Defensive Player of the Year, 2nd Team All-Conference. Evans received his award because he averages 11.7 points per game and six assists per game. He also averages seven steals per game, which is the second highest in the country.

The Chargers’ Ty Cockfield has received 1st Team All-Conference. Cockfield has received this award because he averages 16.6 points per game, 4.5 rebounds per game and 3.3 assists per game.

Chargers to host first round NJCAA Region XVII tournament game

The Georgia Highlands College men’s basketball team will be hosting a first round NJCAA Region XVII tournament game on Tuesday, March 7 in the Floyd campus gym at 7:30 p.m.

The Chargers will play whoever wins the “play-in” East Georgia State and Atlanta Metro game on March 6.

If the Chargers win the game on March 7, they will advance to the NJCAA Region XVII Final Four. This game will also take place at the Floyd campus gym because GHC is the highest seed in the NJCAA Region XVII.

Georgia Highlands College Lady Chargers: GCAA championship results

On March 3, the Lady Chargers defeated East Georgia State 56-49 in a GCAA semifinal game. The game was hosted by the highest seed, South Georgia Tech, in Americus, Ga.

Because GHC won this game, the team advanced to the GCAA championship against South Georgia Tech on March 4. GHC fell 65-63 in this game.

Taylor Farley and Kateryna Khomenko led the Lady Chargers in the championship game on March 4. Farley and Khomenko each had 14 points and 4 rebounds.

This game made GHC’s overall season record 19-14.

Lady Chargers advance to GCAA Final Four

On Feb. 28, the Georgia Highlands College Lady Chargers women’s basketball team defeated Andrew College 57-53 during the first round of the GCAA conference tournament.

The score stayed close during the duration of the game. At the half, the Lady Chargers were down 27-25. GHC did not start to take the lead until the end of the 3rd quarter. By the end of the 3rd, the score was 36-33 Georgia Highlands.

The Lady Chargers were led by Taylor Farley and Pam Diokpara the entire game. At the half, Diokpara had scored 9 points while Farley had 7 points.

By the end of the game, Farley had contributed 16 points for the GHC victory and Diokpara had 14 points and 10 rebounds. In addition, Kateryna Khomenko contributed 10 points for the win.

Brandan Harrell, head women’s basketball coach, said, “We got off a little slow. We couldn’t get things clicking off instantly, but we kept getting stops. In the end, we scored enough to win.”

Farley, leading scorer, said that she “feels great” about her performance during this game. She said, “I tried to do what I had to do to keep the team going.”

Since GHC won this game, they will now advance to the GCAA Final Four. The Final Four will be hosted by the highest seed, South Georgia Tech, in Americus, Ga. The Lady Chargers will face East Georgia State on Friday, March 3 at 5:30 p.m.

Lady Chargers to host first round GCAA tournament game

The Lady Chargers will be hosting a first round GCAA conference tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m.

This game will take place in the Floyd campus gym and the 2nd ranked Lady Chargers will be facing the 7th ranked Andrew College. The women’s team played Andrew College on Feb. 25 and won by a score of 64-60.

If the Lady Chargers win tomorrow night, they will play in a semifinal game on Friday, March 3 against the team that wins the East Georgia State and Atlanta Metro quarterfinal game.

Chargers defeat Chattahoochee Tech

The Chargers won 105-85 over Chattahoochee Tech on Feb. 22 at the Floyd campus gym. This game made their overall season record 26-1.

GHC was led by Kyvon Davenport with 24 points, 5 blocks and 13 rebounds. Ty Cockfiled finished right behind Davenport with 19 points. Kamar McKnight contributed 15 points for the win for the Chargers.

Lady Chargers win last regular season home game

The GHC Lady Chargers defeated Chattahoochee Technical College 69-48 on Feb. 22 for the team’s last regular season home game of the season.

The Lady Chargers were led by Pam Diokpara. Diokpara had a double-double and contributed 23 points and 13 rebounds. Kateryna Khomenko had 11 points while Maria Crider had 10 points.

This game made the Lady Chargers 10-2 in GCAA conference play and 16-13 in the overall season.

Pringle and Khomenko lead the Lady Chargers to victory

On Feb. 18, the GHC Lady Chargers basketball team defeated East Georgia State College 48-33 at the Floyd campus gym. GHC is ranked 2nd in the GCAA and East Georgia State is ranked 3rd. East Georgia State just beat the 1st ranked South Georgia Tech in their game prior to this one.

D’Andra Pringle and Kateryna Khomenko led the Lady Chargers to this victory. Pringle and Khomenko each contributed 10 points for this win.

The next home game for the Lady Chargers is on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. The women will play Chattahoochee Tech at this game.

GHC Chargers defeat East Georgia State at home

The Georgia Highlands College Chargers men’s basketball team defeated East Georgia State 113-74 at home on Feb. 18.

Rico Bonds led the Chargers with 20 points. Ty Cockfield finished right behind him with 18 points. Kyvon Davenport contributed 14 points for the Chargers during this game.

The next home game for the Chargers is Wednesday, Feb. 21. They will face Chattahoochee Tech at this game that will start at 7:30 p.m.

Ping-Pong tournament coming up soon at GHC

Every year, the Six Mile Post sponsors a ping-pong intramural activity at the Floyd and Cartersville campuses.

One of this year’s tournaments will be held on Feb. 27 at the Floyd campus. Registration is currently underway and will end on Feb. 20. For more information about the Floyd event, contact J.J. Merritt at jmerritt@highlands.edu or at 706-204-2252.
