Former Oregon forward Lauren Yearwood transferring to Santa Clara

Former Oregon Ducks forward Lauren Yearwood will enroll at Santa Clara, she shared on social media Tuesday night.

Yearwood asked for — and was granted — her release in April. The sophomore must sit out one year per NCAA rules before she’s eligible to play in 2017-18 as a junior.

Yearwood, who represented Canada in U15, U16, U17 and U19 action before enrolling at Oregon, will see a familiar face when she gets to the Bay Area. Former Oregon graduate assistant Taelor Karr is a member of the Broncos’ coaching staff.

In addition, Mallory McGwire’s sister, Morgan, will be a senior for the Broncos next season. Santa Clara, which plays in the West Coast Conference, went 14-16 last season under first-year head coach Bill Carr.

“We love her to death,” Graves said in April. “I know her teammates are happy for her in a chance for a new opportunity. … All she had to do was ask for it [the release]. We had no issue and there’s no restrictions.”

Yearwood’s announcement came on the same day Notre Dame transfer Erin Boley announced she will enroll at Oregon. Boley was ranked the No. 5 overall recruit in the 2016 class by espnW.

Erin Boley, former Gatorade national player of the year, picks Ducks after transfer from Notre Dame

UPDATE: Oregon officially announced Boley’s transfer in a Wednesday morning news release.

“Erin is the whole package when it comes to being a great teammate, a hard worker, an amazing student and a talented player,” head coach Kelly Graves said. “She is a competitor and a winner in every sense.”

Erin Boley, who spent her freshman year at Notre Dame and was espnW’s No. 5 overall player in the 2016 class, has committed to the Oregon women’s basketball program.

Boley, who also visited Stanford and Vanderbilt, was ranked one spot behind Oregon freshman of the year guard Sabrina Ionescu in the recruiting rankings.

“I kind of knew what I was looking for this time around,” Boley said in an interview with the Emerald. “I loved my visit to Oregon. I was just there this past weekend. I felt like I fit in perfectly with the team and loved Coach (Kelly) Graves and all the coaches. I felt like it’s a good place for me to make my new home and I feel like Oregon’s the school for me this time around.”

The 6-foot-2 forward will have to sit one year due to NCAA rules but is eligible to play beginning with the 2018-19 season. She will have three years of eligibility left.

Boley cited Oregon’s family environment as key factor in her decision. The Ducks’ run to the Elite Eight caught her attention as well.

“I think the Ducks have a bright future for sure,” Boley said. “I felt like I fit in really well and I could see myself going to school there. The players and the coaches were the deciding factor.”

Boley — a Hodgenville, Kentucky, native — announced in April that she would transfer from Notre Dame.

“The [recruiting] process was definitely different this time around,” Boley said. “I’m glad I made a decision.”

Her high school accolades are impressive. She was a McDonald’s All-American and the Gatorade national player of the year while averaging 20.7 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, three assists as a senior.

“She’s a complete player,” Kentucky Premier coach David Tapley said. “This kid can play back to the basket, she can take you off the dribble, shoot the 3-pointer and she’s a 4.0 kid. She’s a gym rat. She’s a kid that wants to be pushed and she’s a winner.”

Boley played in 37 of Notre Dame’s games last year, starting in 10 of them. She averaged 6.5 points and 2.8 rebounds in 15 minutes a game for Notre Dame, which advanced to the Elite Eight.

Boley hopes to study product design at Oregon.

“I really liked the school itself,” Boley said.

Correction: A previous version of this post misstated Boley’s first year of eligibility. She will be able to play for Oregon during the 2018-19 season.

Maggie Balint 1 of 3 finalists for NFCA national freshman of the year award

Maggie Balint’s punched her ticket to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

Now, she’ll focus on ensuring her team joins in on the fun.

On Wednesday, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association named Balint one of three finalists for its national freshman of the year award. The winner is announced on May 30 in Oklahoma City. Should the Ducks advance against No. 14-seeded Kentucky this weekend, they’ll be in town as well.

“I think it’s exciting for the program,” head coach Mike White said before Wednesday’s practice. “Obviously we’re doing some things as far as recruiting. … Maggie works hard. She came out in the fall and found out she had to do some things to get better. She worked her tail off and then came back in January ready to go.”

The West Grove, Pennsylvania, native ranks 10th nationally with a 1.16 ERA. She tops the Pac-12 with a .166 opponent batting average and leads the Ducks in wins (21), strikeouts (150) and saves (three).

Balint joined UCLA pitcher Rachel Garcia and Minnesota slugger Kendyl Lindaman in the grouping of finalists.

“They’re both tremendous players,” White said of Garcia and Lindaman.

Either way, the billing of the nation’s top newcomer will be historic. Never before has a player from the Pac-12 or Big Ten won the award.

Oregon third baseman Jenna Lilley was also a finalist for the award during her 2015 freshman campaign.

Terry Wilson Jr. lands at Garden City Community College after transfer from Oregon

Former Oregon quarterback Terry Wilson Jr. has landed at Kansas’ Garden City Community College. Wilson in April announced he was transferring from the Ducks football program. At the time, wide receiver Darren Carrington called the quarterback battle “a good competition between Justin [Herbert] and Travis Jonsen.”

The Broncbusters finished the 2016 reason ranked No. 1 nationally among NJCAA schools. The team’s coach, Jeff Simms, was named the NJCAA coach of the year.

Wilson announced the news on Twitter.

Wilson will be eligible to play immediately for the Broncbusters and then can transfer to a Division I institution after one year.

Garden City is located in rural Kansas, roughly three and a half hours west of Wichita. Wilson, who checked in at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds while at Oregon, is originally from Del City, Oklahoma — a two and a half hour drive from Garden City.

Former Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall and current Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver/returner Tyreek Hill are among Garden City’s recent All-Americans.

Softball earns No. 3 overall seed, will host Illinois-Chicago, Wisconsin, Missouri in NCAA Regionals

A strong end to the regular season once again netted Oregon softball home field advantage in the NCAA Tournament.

The Ducks (47-6), winners of 10 straight games, earned the No. 3 overall seed on Sunday night and will face Illinois-Chicago (38-20) to open their postseason run on Friday. The Ducks also welcome Wisconsin (33-15) and Missouri (29-26) to town as part of the NCAA Regional round.

“Every team’s difficult at this point,” head coach Mike White said.

White, 21-0 in regional round games, said playing at home to open the NCAA Tournament was the program’s No. 1 goal entering the 2017 season.

Oregon was just part of the Pac-12 dominance atop the rankings. No. 2 Arizona, No. 5 UCLA and No. 6 Washington also represent the conference in the top eight seeds.

“I think it says a lot about the Pac-12 this year that we’re very strong,” White said. “Hopefully that will continue into the postseason.”

If the seeds hold, the Ducks are in line to host No. 14-seeded Kentucky during Memorial Day weekend in the NCAA Super Regional round.

Of the three teams coming to Eugene this weekend, Oregon saw just one of them during the regular season. The Ducks picked up two wins over then-ranked No. 24 Missouri in early March.

“I think the key to this weekend is to never underestimate any opponent,” senior Danica Mercado said. “We really focus on taking one game at a time. The regional — it’s postseason. Anyone can win any given day.”

The Ducks lost three consecutive series during the heart of Pac-12 play to UCLA, Washington and Arizona. But then Oregon responded with a sweep of Oregon State before arguably its biggest series win of the year, a sweep of then-No. 2 Florida State in Eugene.

“I think we’re on a good path right now,” Mercado said. “I think the ball is rolling in the right direction.”

Oregon opens NCAA Tournament play with an ESPNU-televised game against Illinois-Chicago on Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Jane Sanders Stadium.

Edward Cheserek pulls out yet another Pac-12 title at 10,000 meters

Sure, Edward Cheserek admits, he’s got a lot of titles. They come in all shapes and sizes. He’s racked up 17 NCAA titles, 14 on the track and three by cross country. And six Pac-12 titles — four cross country and two on the track.

So, after coasting to a win in the final of the 10,000-meter run on Saturday at the Pac-12 track and field championships, Cheserek admitted space has definitely become an issue. Any why not? He’s two NCAA titles away from becoming the most decorated NCAA athlete in any sport.

Saturday, he earned yet another piece of hardware.

“I keep adding them, but I don’t know what I can do with this,” Cheserek said amid a laugh. “I have a lot in my house. I don’t have the space to put it.”

Cheserek finished in 29 minutes, 11.76 seconds for the win. Cal’s Trent Brendel came home second in 29:20.52 and Oregon redshirt freshman Tanner Anderson took third in 29:21.43.

Cheserek’s win helped the Ducks take a 13-point lead over UCLA for the top spot in the Pac-12 Championships. Action concludes on Sunday at Hayward Field where the Duck men are gunning for their 11th consecutive team title.

But for Cheserek, the 10,000-meter race on Saturday is just part of his season-ending progression. Cheserek is also entered in Sunday’s 5,000 final but didn’t answer a question from a reporter on if he will line up.

“I always just worry about the first one and then go talk to my coach and think about the next race,” he said. “One at a time.”

Later, Oregon head coach Robert Johnson told reporters Cheserek won’t run on Sunday.

“I’ll tell you right now,” Johnson said. “Cheserek is not going to run the 5k tomorrow.”

Cheserek took over the race with five laps remaining. He kicked past Cal’s Robert Brandt then increased his lead lap by lap. Washington State’s Michael Williams, who finished fourth, gave chase for a few laps, but didn’t have the stamina to compete with one of the sport’s top distance athletes.

The field persevered through a flurry of rain showers that dispatched some of the fans in attendance. But many stuck around to watch Cheserek race in one of his final meets as a collegiate athlete at Hayward Field.

“I was surprised when I saw (the fans),” Cheserek said. “I was like, ‘It’s raining out.’ And everybody was still out there just enjoying it and watching us.”

The Oregon senior will shift his focus after the Pac-12 Championships wrap up.

“My plan is to keep training hard until NCAAs,” he said. “The next thing is regionals then after that, NCAA. Try to stay healthy, try to get stronger and then NCAA.

Anderson, just a freshman, has enjoyed his time so far at Oregon training alongside one of the school’s most prolific winners. Cheserek has taught Anderson the ins and outs of nutrition and training this season — something Anderson knows will come in handy many years down the road.

“Ed helped me tune it to what’s really important to being a good distance runner,” said Anderson, who said his race plan was to stay in fifth and then make his move. He said that moment came with 800 meters to go.

Ducks run-rule Stanford to complete sweep in regular season finale

Talk about an exclamation mark to end the season.

Oregon, coming off arguably its biggest series of the year against Florida State, run-ruled Stanford 9-0 on Saturday to cap its regular season. The win completes a three-game sweep for the No. 3-ranked Ducks, who will now wait to learn their postseason seeding. The NCAA Tournament selection show is set for 7 p.m. on Sunday on ESPN2.

Megan Kleist (19-3) got the win for the Ducks. She pitched four innings of four-hit ball, lowering her ERA to 1.26.

Mia Camuso went 2-for-2 and Jenna Lilley went 3-for-3 at the plate for Oregon, which improved to 47-6.

Shannon Rhodes hit a three-run home run in the first inning to set the tone for the game. Then, the Ducks tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning. Cherish Burks, Danica Mercado and Lilley all scored for the Ducks during the frame.

Oregon made the game run-rule eligible with two more runs in the fifth inning. Lilley recorded an RBI single and Daryua Kaboli-Nejad had a pinch hit single to knock in another run.

Rhodes, with three RBIs on Saturday, complied nine during the three-game series.

Oregon is in line to host an NCAA Regional, which would begin on Friday or Saturday at Jane Sanders Stadium.

Ducks opt not to renew head coach Chelsea Shaw’s contract

Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens has opted not to renew Chelsea Shaw’s contract.

The school announced the acrobatics and tumbling news via a release on Wednesday evening. Shaw was 26-9 during her three seasons as head coach for the Ducks. Oregon was the NCATA runner up in each of the three seasons to Baylor.

The Ducks finished the 2017 campaign with an 8-2 record — both season losses came to Baylor. Oregon last won a national title in 2014 when the program beat Azusa Pacific.

Less than two weeks ago, the NCATA named Shaw its coach of the year.

After the Ducks’ loss to Baylor last month, Shaw had indicated that the program was moving forward.

“Huge things for the program — it’s definitely looking up,” Shaw said. “This year was a fantastic year for us, and although it hurts right now and the loss is hard, it was a great year.”

Shaw signed a three-year contract worth $50,000 annually when she took over the program in 2014. Her contract was set to expire on June 30, 2017.

Shaw took over the program after coach Felecia Mulkey departed Eugene for Waco. Shaw also competed for the Ducks.

Oregon announced Nicole Rodenbach will immediately assume duties as interim coach. Rodenbach joined the Oregon staff in 2015 after coaching at Scottsdale Christian Academy. The school said it will begin a national search for Shaw’s successor.

Men’s hoops lands commitment from New Mexico grad transfer Elijah Brown

Oregon men’s basketball continues to add to its 2017-18 roster. The Ducks landed a commitment from New Mexico graduate transfer Elijah Brown late Sunday night, CBS Sports reported.

As a graduate transfer, Brown will be eligible immediately and won’t have to sit out a year.

Brown, a 6-foot-4 wing, mulled offers from Gonzaga, Iowa State, Northwestern and Saint Mary’s before deciding on the Ducks, The Oregonian reported.

Last year, Brown averaged 18.8 points, 5.2 rebounds  and 3.1 assists per game. Brown began his career at Butler before transferring to New Mexico. He ranked No. 4 on the Bulldogs’ squad in scoring as a freshman (6.8 ppg) while appearing in 30 of 31 games.

Brown is the son of Golden State Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown.

The Orange County, California, native was a unanimous All-Mountain West first team selection as a sophomore after averaging 21.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

Brown’s arrival will help to reload Oregon’s 2017-18 roster after a slew of departures. The Ducks will welcome freshmen Abu Kigab, V.J. Bailey, Kenny Wooten Jr. and Troy Brown Jr. to campus along with a redshirt senior in Elijah Brown.
