Kahn, Noor make last-minute pitches to voters

Hours before the polls open for Tuesday’s primary election, the two leading candidates vying to represent the University of Minnesota’s area at the Capitol are making their final cases to voters.

Long-time incumbent Rep. Phyllis Kahn, DFL-Minneapolis, is facing a strong challenger, Somali-born Mohamud Noor, who is a city school board member with support from many elected officials, including former Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak.

Sale aside, Doran’s Dinkytown presence lingers

Around the same time Doran Companies put five apartment complexes up for sale, the development firm snagged two Dinkytown sites, adding to its hefty portfolio of University of Minnesota-area properties.

Doran Companies, which is now selling all its luxury housing complexes near the University, recently made a $1.76 million deal on property that has faced up-and-down development drama for nearly a year.

Doran: All U-area projects up for sale

After opening doors of luxury apartment complexes to University of Minnesota students for nearly four years, prolific developer Kelly Doran put five of his projects up for sale.

Doran’s development firm, Doran Cos., is selling through Cushman and Wakefield, which posted a marketing flyer for five of the company’s properties near campus. One complex, the Bridges, is still under construction and opening this fall.

Kill rebuilds defense with next recruiting class

The Gophers could trot out an all-upperclassmen starting defensive unit next season if they wanted to.

Even after losing Ra’Shede Hageman and Brock Vereen to the 2014 NFL Draft, Minnesota has nearly a dozen players on its defense with considerable game experience. Bringing back a seasoned defensive group is great for the Gophers short term, but requires their coaching staff to work hard on the recruiting trail this summer to re-fill the cupboard.

National report calls out U’s admin spending

A national study criticized the University of Minnesota's administrative spending, but the numbers may be skewed.

The Institute for Policy Studies released a report on Sunday, evaluating public universities’ levels of administrative spending in comparison to their student debt levels and numbers of contingent faculty employed. The report ranked the University third most unequal in its spending. The institute pulled the report Tuesday morning and issued a statement saying a revised study will be released once the data is checked for inaccuracies.

New CFANS dean announced

The University of Minnesota named Brian Buhr the new dean of the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences on Monday.

He will also serve as the new director of the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station. Buhr, who has served as interim dean and director since August, will take his posts in June, pending Board of Regents approval.

Dayton, legislators agree on medical marijuana proposal

Legislation to allow medical marijuana cleared a major hurtle on Thursday as the House and Senate agreed on a deal that sets parameters for its use.

The bill, which Gov. Mark Dayton has indicated he will sign, is expected to pass both chambers on Friday.

Since its introduction, the legislation has garnered support from law enforcement, medical groups and legislators.

Former U research assistant charged with running meth lab

A former University of Minnesota research assistant stands charged for running a meth lab out of a storage unit near the St. Paul campus and school officials are investigating if he stole University property.

On Tuesday, Matthew Lee Krause, 30, faced one felony count for manufacturing methamphetamine, according to charges filed in Ramsey County District Court. According to the criminal complaint, a witness told St. Paul police Krause cooked meth on campus and stole University property, including chemicals, in the past.
