A fashion showcase: Project Headline

By: Micaela Resh

Last month, the Minnesota Daily hosted its first-ever fashion showcase called “Project Headline” in collaboration with University of Minnesota student group FAB: Fashion and Business.

The event in Rapson Hall put the creations of two students, Shengjie Li and Marissa Lynch, against each other. Challenged to meld fashion and news in a literal sense, both designers created garments out of fabric and newspaper.

“Nightosaur: you know, a dinosaur at night”

By: Mary Reller

On a hot summer day after cooling down in a park fountain, the members of Nightosaur sat together on a park bench, exhausted.

They made sure someone stayed awake in case passers-by complained about one of the group’s members — a sleeping, bearded man in an American flag bandana and aviators.

These types of shenanigans are typical for metal band Nightosaur.

Winning wieners

By: Grant Tillery

Hot dogs are the bastard child of the sausage family. They’re the butt of innumerable phallic jokes and derided as mystery-meat atrocities. The taste of mass-market wieners (including the beloved Oscar Mayer brand) does nothing to improve these perceptions.

Sometimes though, hot dogs transcend. After eating several bites of a top-notch frankfurter, bad memories of subpar ballpark fare disappear. No longer is the hot dog just a vehicle for ketchup, mustard, onions and relish — it becomes a canvas for a co-opted American art form, if art and food indeed intersect.

Street style: Gopher game day

By: Micaela Resh

It takes a little ingenuity and creativity to stay stylish at Gophers sporting events. The Fashionista scoured the University of Minnesota’s men’s hockey game last Thursday, searching for students rocking maroon and gold with a fashionable twist.

In the sea of drunken, gopher-all laden fans, a few fans stood out from the pack. Take a peek at these collegiate exemplars where pride meets chic.

Day in the life: Dueling Pianos at the Shout House

Two singing pianists face each other, interacting and cracking jokes with audience members, for the Shout House’s featured entertainment event — dueling pianos.

The 10-year-old Minneapolis establishment features dueling pianos every night except for Mondays. A mix of first-time and returning guests belted “Sweet Caroline” at the Shout House downtown on Saturday night.

Owner Joe Woods started the event after watching a dueling pianos show in South Carolina.

Moon and Pollution gets trip-hoppy

By: Mary Reller

Electronic pop duo Moon and Pollution are possessed by their music.

Trivia Mafia mixes brains and beer

By: Mary Reller

Good spelling sometimes has another incentive: B-E-E-R.

Trivia Mafia — the largest trivia company in Minnesota — started Sunday night trivia nights at the 331 Club years ago.

After a spelling bee event moved from the 331 Club to a new location in 2011, bar owners asked members of Trivia Mafia if they wanted to make their own version of the bee. Since then, Trivia Mafia has been hosting the Drinking Spelling Bee at the club.

“It’s nerdy on paper, but in life it’s not,” said Trivia Mafia co-owner Sean McPherson.
