A viral infection could be the cause of an uptick in reports of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea within the University of Minnesota’s Superblock dorms, according to an email.

In a Boynton Health Service email sent to some students Wednesday, Public Health and Communications Director Dave Golden said the Minnesota Department of Health is looking into potentials reasons students living in Frontier Hall may have fallen ill since Tuesday.

Smith Hall chemical spill a false alarm

A strange odor in Smith Hall on the University of Minnesota’s East Bank prompted a campus-wide text alert of a chemical spill Friday morning, though officials couldn’t find the source of the smell.

The Minneapolis Fire Department received a call around 7:00 a.m. Friday about an odor in the building, University spokesman Steve Henneberry said. The campus was alerted near 8:00 a.m.

Unable to find the odor’s source, University officials sent a subsequent text message about 30 minutes later alerting campus the fire department cleared the building.

The local Hmong community gets a double dip on holiday festivities this week, with the arrival of Thanksgiving and Hmong New Year.

From Nov. 27-29, the Hmong Family Foundation will host a Hmong New Year celebration at the St. Paul RiverCentre. The three-day celebration features Hmong cuisine, dancing and singing contests, Hmong folk music performances, and the Miss Hmong pageant.

Explore a state park on Friday

While some stores will already be promoting deals and opening their doors on Thanksgiving evening, other businesses have shifted their stance on Black Friday and are instead offering their employees the day off.

Some stores, like REI,  have publicized their decision in an effort to stem the tide of what many see as an unhealthy way to spend a holiday that people should spend with family and friends.

More than 200 hundred years ago, a German doctor by the name of Samuel Hahnemann developed his idea of curing diseases using materials that caused symptoms of disease in a healthy person. For example, if a patient came to him and had nausea, Hahnemann would give the patient medicine that would provoke mild nausea in a healthy person. In fact, he believed the more diluted the medicine was, the more impact it would have.
